LEWISBURG, Pa. – Chloe Christakos scored her first goal of the season in the 80th minute to pull the Bucknell women's soccer team within one goal, but the Bison could not find an equalizer despite some more late pressure, and Wright State held on for a 2-1 win on Thursday evening at Emmitt Field.
Bucknell (1-2) piled up 15 corner kicks and saw 57 percent of the possession time in the game, but Wright State (3-0) kept its goalkeeper Maddie Jewell clean for most of the night. The Christakos goal, a perfectly placed header off a free kick from Alana Carlucci, was Bucknell's lone shot on frame in the match.
Kaylee Donnelly made two saves for the Bison. On the second of those stops, Brittney Petrosky punched in the rebound from close range for what proved to be the winning goal in the 50th minute.
Earlier in the game, Jordyne Helinski got behind the Bison defense after a long free kick from Michelle Rings, and Helinski finished off the breakaway to open the scoring in the 28th minute.
"I was disappointed with how we started the game," said head coach Kelly Cook. "Wright State is a very strong team and they play very direct. We took a moment off and they capitalized."
Bucknell's best first-half opportunity came in the 18th minute, when Jenna Marek played in Lilly Courts, whose shot just missed the top left corner.
In the 69th minute, left back Leanne Engemann delivered a beautiful cross right to the head of Emilene Parham, but the shot went over the bar.
"Capitalizing on our chances has been a problem for us early in the season," said Cook. "It's great that we are generating opportunities, but we have to finish more of them."
Both teams finished with 13 total shots, and the Bison led 15-4 in corner kicks.
After playing its first three games at home for the first time in school history, the Bison take to the road on Sunday to play 13th-ranked Georgetown. The Hoyas last season went 21-1-3 and advanced to the College Cup semifinals for the second time in three years. Georgetown is 1-1-1 on the season after playing a scoreless draw with Duke on Wednesday night.
"Georgetown is going to be a very tough team," said Cook. "Any time you step into that environment you need to be at your absolute best. An away game is something new for this group, so we have to regroup, prepare for the travel, and be ready from the start."
