Baseball Downed in Series Finale to Lehigh

BETHLEHEM, Pa.— A grand slam by the Mountain Hawks in the second inning of game three helped propel Lehigh to a series sweep of the Bison on Sunday afternoon. Bucknell pulled within 5-4 in the seventh on a Luke Hartman double, but the Mountain Hawks plated an insurance run in the eighth to take a 6-4 win.
Lehigh struck first in the game, opening a 4-0 lead on a grand slam by Tyler Schreiner. The Mountain Hawks reached on back-to-back singles up the middle, before an error by the Bison allowed the bases loaded with nobody out. Schreiner cleared the bases with his home run and gave Lehigh a commanding 4-0 lead after two.
Bucknell scored a run in the top of the fifth after Peter Marren reached on a four-pitch walk. He then stole second, before reaching third on a double steal attempt. Evan Madigan then brought Marren home on an RBI single to right field that cut the Lehigh lead to three, 4-1.
Lehigh responded in the bottom of the inning with a solo home run on a 3-2 pitch to right field to restore the four-run advantage.
Bucknell inched closer in the sixth inning with two runs. The first came courtesy of a sac fly by Alex Baumann that scored Tyler Wincig, before Marren scored JohnPaul Bell on an RBI single to trail 5-3.
Bucknell then came within one in the top of the seventh. Madigan led things off with a single, before being moved on a sac bunt by Brendan Lowery. Luke Hartman then stepped up and delivered a double to left center that scored Madigan and brought Bucknell within one, 5-4, with two innings to go.
Lehigh restored the two-run advantage in the eighth after a leadoff double by Schreiner and a bunt single. Schreiner then scored from third on the bunt after an error by the Bison on the play.
Wincig singled in the top of the ninth, but Bucknell dropped its sixth straight contest by three runs or less in the 6-4 defeat.
Madigan posted a 2-for-4 day from the plate as the Bison totaled eight hits overall. Hartman, Marren, and Baumann each picked up an RBI for Bucknell in the defeat.
Nate Grisius (2-6) was charged with the loss for Bucknell.
The Bison will play at Mount St. Mary's on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
