MIDLOTHIAN, Va. -- Senior Katie Childers fired an even-par 72 in the second round, highlighting Bucknell's performance on the opening day of the Patriot League Women's Golf Championship, hosted by Richmond at Independence Golf Club. The Bison are in fifth place after posting team scores of 323 and 314.Â
Bucknell had a tough first round, with a 3-over 75 from freshman Sally Sohn the team's lone sub-80 card. But the Bison improved by nine strokes in the afternoon, and their 637 total is six behind fourth-place Lehigh.
Boston University holds a narrow lead with a 610 composite, but Navy (611) and three-time defending champion Richmond (614) are right on the Terriers' heels.Â
Childers, an All-Patriot League performer with a T-5th finish last season, bounced back from an opening-round 86 to post the best score in the entire field in the second round. Childers carded a 1-under 35 on the front nine, boosted by birdies at holes 4, 6 and 8. A couple of bogeys on the inward side moved her out of red numbers, but she made a nice birdie at the 415-yard 16th -- the longest par-4 on the course -- and then finished with two pars to shoot 72.Â
Childers' 158 total is tops on the team and puts her in 15th place individually. One shot behind at 159 is Sohn, who followed her 75 with an 84. Sohn got out to a great start. Bucknell started the first round on the 10th hole, and Sohn made back-to-back birdies at 13 and 14 and was 2-under through six holes.Â
Also for the Bison, Casey Morrow logged a pair of 80s, Erin Holmes shot 85-79, Meredith Langs shot 83-83, and Sun Woo Jeon carded 88-84.Â
Navy's Shannon Gould has the individual lead after 36 holes with a 3-over 147 (74-73). Richmond's Sophie DiPetrillo is one shot back, and Boston University's Hanako Kawasaki is two back.Â
The third and final round gets underway on Sunday at 8:30 a.m.Â
