LEWISBURG, Pa. -- The Bucknell Athletics Leadership Institute offered a new and exclusive event on March 26 at the Graham Building in Philadelphia. Through a generous donation of space and resources from Trustee Emeritus and Bucknell Athletics Hall-of-Famer Bill Graham '62, student-athlete Institute participants were able to take part in a leadership session that featured a moderated panel of eight accomplished Bucknell student-athlete alumni.Â
The alums shared their experiences, challenges, and accomplishments through a leadership lens during their time at Bucknell and through their professional and personal lives. In addition, the current student-athletes had time to connect with the alums one-on-one, in a more intimate setting, to discuss key leadership topics, hear more about their personal and professional journeys and have any opportunity to connect with them. This was a great opportunity for the group to get off campus and have an evening devoted to their leadership development here at Bucknell to prepare them for life beyond. Â
"The networking event in Philadelphia was not only a great opportunity for us to connect with student-athlete alumni, but it also gave us another perspective on the leadership experiences that Bucknell student-athletes have," said Selby Schnobrich, a junior setter on the volleyball team. "Alumni from decades ago or just five years ago all gave us useful advice on how we can be better leaders for our team and carry that experience into the workplace in the future. They spoke on the importance of perseverance, vulnerability, and proactive communication in order to bring out the best of those we lead. I feel like I have gained a fresh look on how my own leadership is developing, and I now have a network of Bucknell alumni I know are supporting me and are eager to provide words of wisdom about the experiences that all Bucknell athletes share."
"The networking event in Philadelphia is one of the best experiences we as leaders could've attended," said All-America water polo player Rade Joksimovic. "It has provided us with insight on how to overcome obstacles and lead through adversity both in our respective sports as well as when and if we go into the workforce. It was a phenomenal experience overall, it was a pleasure meeting various Bucknell alumni who have been successful in everything they have done, both at Bucknell and later on in their lives. We are blessed to have been part of such an amazing event!"
"The event was a really cool experience; I especially enjoyed the uniqueness of the panel," said junior Julienne Egofske of the Bison softball team. "Every panelist is at a different point in their career, took a certain path after college, and had an array of student-athlete experiences, some which I identified more with than others. It was also really special to see that although some panelists graduated 30-40 years ago, they can still remember specific instances and events as Bucknell athletes that made them a better person and leader today."Â
