LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bringing 23 years of senior-level fundraising experience in the higher education and non-profit space, Josh Bowerman has joined the Bucknell Athletics leadership team as senior associate director of athletics for revenue generation.
Bowerman, who launched his professional career as a regional manager of capital giving at Bucknell from 2002-06, will work closely with vice president for Athletics and Recreation Tim Pavlechko '91, associate vice president of University Advancement for strategic philanthropy Josh Grill, and other colleagues in University Advancement to provide strategic leadership for revenue generation across Bison Athletics, with a focus on philanthropy and external partnerships.
"I am excited to welcome Josh back to Bucknell in this critically important leadership position," said Pavlechko. "Josh has been a very successful fundraiser at several prestigious institutions throughout a career that spans more than two decades. Now more than ever, it is critical that we maximize every avenue of revenue generation in support of our more than 750 Bison student-athletes along with our robust array of campus recreation and fitness programs. I am looking forward to Josh's contributions and to the expertise he brings as we continue to advance the Drive for Five and future campaign priorities."
"We are thrilled to welcome Josh back to the Bucknell family to lead our athletic department's philanthropic initiatives," said Grill. "His extensive experience and proven track record will be invaluable assets as we navigate the rapidly evolving landscape of Division I college athletics and ensures that Bucknell remains positioned to provide a world-class experience for our student-athletes."
"Bucknell is a special place, and I am fortunate to have had the privilege of being part of the Bucknell family early in my career," said Bowerman. "I've carried pieces of that experience with me to every place I've been, and I'm excited to be coming 'home'. I consider it an honor and a privilege to be able to be able to once again represent this wonderful place and help Bucknell's student-athletes secure the financial resources they need to enjoy a distinctive college experience—both in the classroom and on the field of competition."
Most recently, Bowerman spent the last year as chief development officer at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, N.J., a world-renowned center for theoretical research and intellectual inquiry. Bowerman was a member of the IAS's senior management team and had oversight responsibilities for the Institute's comprehensive fundraising and external constituent engagement activities.
From 2019-2024, Bowerman was a member of the senior development team at the prestigious University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom. He served as head of development for the School of Physical Sciences from 2019-22 and then as director of development for University Schools and Non-Clinical Programmes from 2022-24. Throughout his tenure, he managed a large portfolio of principal gift-level prospects, and he served as the lead fundraiser for the Cambridge's largest-ever capital project, the £300M Ray Dolby Centre/Cavendish Laboratory.
Prior to his work overseas, Bowerman worked in advancement leadership roles at Norfolk State University, Virginia Commonwealth University, The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, Wake Forest University, Austin College, and Bucknell.
Bowerman is a 1997 graduate of Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, Texas, and he earned an MBA from Bellarmine University in Louisville, Ky., in 2001. In 2019, he was selected into the Fulbright U.S.- Germany International Education Administrators Program. The prestigious grant led to a 12-day group seminar designed to familiarize U.S. higher education administrators from American universities, colleges or community colleges with Germany's higher education system, society and culture.
