SAN DIEGO, Calif.—The No. 24 Bucknell University women's water polo team dropped its opening two matches to Azusa Pacific and No. 22 San Diego State to open the Aztec Invite on Saturday.
Bucknell drops to 13-5 after the two losses.
Game One: Azusa Pacific 11, No. 24 Bucknell 10
A six-goal second period from the Cougars proved too much to overcome for the Bison as Bucknell dropped its second straight game to a team either ranked or receiving votes.
After a 2-2 first period between the two teams, the Cougars broke open the match with six goals to Bucknell's two to take an 8-4 lead at the break, including three straight to end the half.
However, a strong second half from the Bison allowed the Orange and Blue to get back into the game. Nina Benson started the second half with a goal, before Kali Hyham and Ally Furano scored to cut the Cougar lead to 8-7 with 4:43 left in the third.
The Cougars responded with a goal with just over four minutes to play in the third to restore the two-goal advantage entering the fourth.
Azusa Pacific added an additional goal 30 seconds into the fourth quarter, before Sarah Mooney managed a goal with 5:24 remaining.
Ally Furano then cut the APU lead to 10-9 with 4:43 to go on a goal before the Cougars seized a goal twenty seconds later to lead, 11-9.
Mooney scored once again to make it a one-goal game with 3:51 to go, but A. Furano's late shot to tie the game was blocked in the field to help the Cougars hold on.
A. Furano scored four times to lead the Bison, while Hyham and Mooney added three and two goals, respectively. Georgia Lewis made four saves in the cage for the Bison.
