Paige Furano Ties Single-Game Record in Goals Scored With Seven
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The No. 24 Bucknell University women's water polo team dropped a close contest to No. 14 ranked Harvard on Sunday morning, despite a school-record-tying seven goals from Paige Furano.
Bucknell drops to 19-9 with the loss.
After a 2-0 start to the game, the Bison used a power play goal from Ally Furano to cut into the Harvard lead after Kali Hyham drew an exclusion.
With the Crimson leading 3-2 entering the second, Nina Benson tied things all square at three on an assist by Paige Furano.
After the Crimson took a 7-4 lead in the second, the Bison battled back to tie the game at eight entering the halftime intermission. The four Bucknell goals were scored by either Furano sister, with Paige netting three, and Ally netting a single goal during the stretch, including an assist to one another on the initial goal.
The game remained close in the third quarter, with the Bison tying the game at 11 in the third on another goal by P. Furano, before Harvard took a 12-11 lead entering the fourth.
P. Furano found the equalizing goal to start the fourth, but Harvard responded just a few minutes later on a goal from Borden Wahl before adding another quick goal just a few seconds later. A third goal with just over a minute to go helped seal the win for the 14th-ranked Crimson in a 15-13 decision.
P. Furano finished with seven goals and an assist on the day, tying the single-game goals record for a Bucknell player in the process. It was the fifth seven-goal game in team history and the first since current assistant coach Hannah Sunday did it against VMI in 2015.
The Furano sisters combined for ten of Bucknell's 13 goals, with Nina Benson posting two and Sarah Mooney collecting the other goal.
