HELLERTOWN, Pa. — Chris Tanabe fired a 3-under-par 69, the best score in the 116-player field, and the Bucknell men's golf team is tied for second place after posting a first-round 294 on Sunday afternoon at the Abarta Coca-Cola Collegiate Invitational.
At the halfway mark of the 36-hole tournament, the Bison find themselves in a three-way tie for second place alongside host Lafayette and St. Peter's. Colgate compiled a 290 team tally to grab the lead. Fifth-place Robert Morris (298) was the only other squad in the 20-team field to break 300.
Tanabe was the low Bison on Sunday, with his 3-under 69 tying his career best, set in a win at Quechee Club in Vermont in the fall. He started his day on the 13th hole and dropped a stroke with a bogey at the par-5 14th, but that was his only blemish. Tanabe birdied holes 1, 8 and 9 to post a 3-under 33 on the course's front nine, and he added a fourth birdie on his closing hole, the par-4 12th.
Tanabe was one of four players in the field to post a red number. Colgate's Ryan Skae and Bryant's Matthew Stafford both shot 2-under 70, and Robert Morris' Kyle Grube shot 71. Six other players shot even-par 72.
Elsewhere for the Bison, J.P. Raftery shot 74, Peter Bradbeer 75 and Carter Cook 76. Bucknell tossed out a 78 from Jason Lohwater. Raftery and Bradbeer made two birdies apiece.
The second and final round gets underway at 9 a.m. Monday.
