HAMILTON, N.Y. – The Bucknell women's lacrosse team's comeback fell just short as Colgate held on for a 12-11 victory on Saturday at Beyer-Small '76 Field.
Trailing 10-5 with 20 minutes remaining in regulation, the Bison (4-8, 2-2 Patriot League) mounted a furious comeback. First, they scored four unanswered goals to draw back within a single strike with 15:42 left to play. After the Raiders (4-7, 2-2 Patriot League) regrouped by striking twice in less than a minute to go up, 12-9, with 12:17 on the clock, Bucknell scored two unanswered goals, the first coming at the 11:48 mark and the second coming with 2:01 remaining in regulation.
Following Kali Peeple's tally that made it a 12-11 game, Samantha Croston stopped two free-position bids to keep Colgate up by one. But Croston turned the ball over with 19 seconds left to play, giving the Bison one last opportunity to send the game to overtime for the third time in the past four games. But Audrey Walsh's shot hit the post as time expired, and the Raiders emerged one-goal victors.
Bucknell came out strong, scoring the game's first three goals and building a 4-1 lead by the 21:25 mark of the first half. But Colgate scored six unanswered goals to carry a 7-4 advantage into the intermission. The Raiders extended their lead to 10-5 by netting three of the second half's first four goals.
Nine different Bison found the back of the net over the course of the contest, with Peeples and Morgan Steinhacker netting two apiece. Peeples also led all players with eight draw controls while Lillie Hunt registered three assists.
For Colgate, Danielle Van Calcar scored four goals while Noelle Patterson added a hat trick. Croston made 15 saves to Jamisen DeWitt's 12. Bucknell held advantages in shots (35-29), shots on goal (26-24) and draw controls (14-10) while Colgate led in ground balls (31-22).
The Bison next take on Holy Cross in road Patriot League action on Saturday, April 6 at 2:05 p.m.
