Gimmestad 3-for-3 for Bison
LEWISBURG, Pa. – Anna Gimmestad went 3-for-3 at the plate and made a sensational diving catch at shortstop in support of Raeanne Geffert's complete-game four-hitter, leading the Bucknell softball team to a 6-1 victory over Colgate on Saturday afternoon at Becker Field. Lauren Hadley and Taylor Wolfgang drove in two runs apiece for the Bison, who were victorious in their first home game and first Patriot League game of the season.
Geffert scattered four hits over seven innings with a pair of strikeouts en route to her sixth win of the season. She benefited from stellar, error-free defense behind her. All three outfielders made tough catches on a sunny and windy day, and Gimmestad punctuated the effort with a diving catch on a line drive up the middle to rob Jordan Miller for the second out in the top of the seventh.
Meghan Romero collected three of Colgate's four hits, including a solo home run in the top of the fourth inning for the Raiders' lone tally of the afternoon. Mia Guevarra provided Colgate's other highlight with a sensational diving catch into the center field wall to deny Marisa Alemany an extra-base hit in the third inning.
The Bison got off to a good start with a pair of runs off Colgate starter Bella Crow in the bottom of the first inning. Alemany was hit by a pitch and moved all the way around to third base on two wild pitches. Hadley then poked a sacrifice fly to right field, and two batters later Jess Hom's opposite-field base hit plated Gimmestad.
Leading 2-1 into the bottom of the fifth, Bucknell picked up some key insurance with a four-run outburst.
Nicole Rivait reached on a throwing error to start the inning, and then Allyse Volpe beat out a bunt single without even drawing a throw. Alemany bunted both runners over, and then Hadley ripped an RBI single through the left side. Gimmestad followed with another hard-hit single to bring home Volpe, and then Taylor Wolfgang greeted Colgate reliever Kaitlyn Borruso with a rocket up the right-center alley for a two-run double and a 6-1 lead.
Geffert worked around two-out singles in both the sixth and seventh innings to close out Bucknell's 12th consecutive win over Colgate.
The same two teams will meet again on Sunday, with a doubleheader starting at noon. Both games will be shown on the Patriot League Network at PatriotLeague.tv.
