WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Bucknell University baseball team split two games at Army on Saturday afternoon, falling 11-1 in game one before picking things up in game two for a 2-0 win.
Game One: Army 11, Bucknell 1
Three RBI doubles topped off with a hit by pitch RBI in the third inning helped Army score six runs in the frame to break open a 3-1 game en route to an 11-1 victory in game one.
After two consecutive walks to start the game, a home run by the Black Knights in the bottom of the first inning on their only hit of the frame helped give Army a 3-0 lead after the first inning.
In the top of the third, Bucknell cut the Army lead to 3-1 after Caleb Broughton led off the inning with a single to the shortstop. A double by Dominic Toso helped move Broughton to third before eventually being waved home after a fielding error by the Army outfielder.
Army broke the game open in the bottom of the inning, starting the inning with a walk from Andre Walden before he stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error.
The Black Knights then used an RBI double from Jeremiah Adams to score Walden from third, before Josh White brought in two more runs with an RBI double down the left field line.
Another double from the Black Knights and an HBP rounded out the scoring and gave Army a 9-1 lead after three that it wouldn't relinquish in an 11-1 win in game one.
Army scored its 11 runs on just six hits, all of them for extra bases.
Jack Grabek (1-4), took the loss for Bucknell on the mound. Dominic Toso collected two hits, while Jared Drizin, Caleb Broughton, and Evan Madigan each picked up a hit.
Game Two: Bucknell 2, Army 0
Nate Grisius tossed seven innings while allowing two hits in Bucknell's first shut out victory since a 3-0 win over Lehigh on April 21, 2018. Hunter Robichaux struck out four of the six batters he faced, and retired the final six Army bats in order to earn the save.
Bucknell did its scoring early on, with Alex Baumann singling through the left side to score Jack Schuler in the top of the first inning. Schuler and Luke Hartman each walked to open the game, before Schuler scored from second on Baumann's hit through the left area.
Bucknell doubled its lead in the top of the second when Caleb Broughton reached on a fielding error with one out. A double by PJ Strahm then moved Broughton to third before Jack Schuler grounded out to shortstop to allow Broughton to score and give Bucknell a 2-0 lead.
The 2-0 lead proved to be enough for Bucknell, as Nate Grisius allowed just a single hit from that point onward, a single from Trey Martin in the fifth inning. The Black Knights looked to be in a position to score after moving Martin to third on a sac bunt and a ground out, but Grisius forced a fly out to right field to end the threat for the inning.
That was the closest Army could get in the game, with Grisius going through the sixth and seventh unscathed before being replaced by Robichaux to start the eighth. Robichaux sealed the deal with four strikeouts and retired all six of the Army batters he faced in order as Bucknell took a 2-0 win over Army, its first win in conference play this season and its first road win in ten tries this season.
The win snapped an 11-game losing streak for Bucknell overall.
Grisius also added four strikeouts on the day, while the three Bucknell hits came from Hartman, Strahm, and Baumann.
Bucknell will now travel to Holy Cross on Sunday for two games. The games will be streamed live on the Patriot League Network.
