Nicholas Sadd turns in dominant start but takes a no-decision
LEWISBURG, Pa. – Nate Thomas hit a go-ahead two-run home run in the top of the eighth inning to lift Saint Joseph's to a 5-4 win over Bucknell on Wednesday at Depew Field. The Hawks erased a two-run deficit with three in the eighth, spoiling another terrific mound performance from Bison sophomore Nicholas Sadd.
Sadd came into the game unscored upon over 9.2 innings of relief work, while allowing just one base hit over that span. He made his first start of the season in this one and was brilliant once again. Sadd faced only one batter more than the minimum through four innings before finally losing his shutout in the fifth when a leadoff hit batsman eventually came around to score on an infield ground out.
Sadd allowed just a run on two hits with five strikeouts and no walks in five innings. He departed with a 3-1 lead but was left with a tough-luck no-decision after Saint Joseph's rallied late. For the season, Sadd now has a stellar 0.61 earned-run average in seven appearances. He has been touched for only one run and three hits in 14.2 innings, with 14 strikeouts and just three walks. Opponents are hitting just .064 against him.
Bucknell staked Sadd to an early lead thanks to a two-out rally in the opening inning. After Hawks starter Jake Meyers retired the first two hitters, Dominic Toso singled and Miles Moore walked. Evan Madigan reached on an infield hit, with an added bonus of a wild throw to first that allowed Toso to come around to score. Moore followed him to the plate on a passed ball for a 2-0 lead.
The Bison made it 3-0 with a run in the third, again coming after Meyers retired the first two hitters. After back-to-back singles by Moore and Madigan put runners at the corners, Madigan was picked off first, but he remained in the rundown long enough to get Moore home from third before being tagged out.
Matt Shobe relieved Sadd with a 3-1 lead to start the sixth inning and was the victim of some bad luck. He picked up two quick outs and seemed to be out of the inning when Andrew Cossetti slapped a slow ground ball to second base, but the throw pulled Moore off the bag at first base to extend the inning. The Hawks took advantage, as Shobe hit the next batter, and then Dominic Cuoci flared a double into the left-center gap to bring home Cossetti with an unearned run.
Bucknell got that run back in the bottom of the seventh, however, when Jack Schuler hit a two-out triple into the right field corner, scoring Ben Smith to make it a 4-2 game.
But the tide turned quickly in the top of the eighth, as Saint Joseph's took the lead in a span of just nine pitches. Liam Bendo led off the frame with a base hit on an 0-2 count, and Cossetti followed with an RBI double to the wall in left-center. Thomas, the Hawks' cleanup hitter, then drilled a 1-2 pitch over the wall in right-center field for a 5-4 lead.
The Bison got the tying run on base with one out in the bottom of the ninth on Smith's second hit of the day, but the game ended in strange fashion. Jared Drizin struck out swinging for the second out as Smith dove into second safely with a stolen base. But the home plate umpire ruled that Drizin's swing interfered with the catcher, and Smith was called out to end the game.
Bucknell (4-16) outhit Saint Joseph's (7-10) 8-7 on the day, with Schuler, Madigan and Smith collecting two hits apiece.
The Bison return to Patriot League action this weekend, playing road doubleheaders at Army on Saturday and Holy Cross on Sunday.
