WASHINGTON, D.C. – Bucknell softball played a shortened game after winning 11-3 in six innings over Howard on Saturday morning, and then played plenty of extra softball while coming up just short with a 9-8 loss in 12 innings to Harvard in the team's second game of the day.
Bucknell's two games were a part of the District Classic, hosted by Georgetown at the Nationals Youth Academy. Weather permitting, the Bison have two games remaining at the event. They are scheduled to play Brown on Sunday at 9 a.m., and Saint Joseph's at 2 p.m.
The Bison are 5-6 on the season, including wins in four of their last six games.
Bucknell 11, Howard 3 (6 innings)
Bucknell hit four home runs, including two by Lauren Hadley, as they rolled to an 11-3 win in six innings over Howard.
Hadley drove in four runs, hitting a two-run homer in the first inning before adding another two-run shot in the sixth. She has three home runs on the season.
Allyse Volpe and Taylor Wolfgang also went yard in the game. Volpe, a freshman, knocked one out for the first time in her career, while Wolfgang absolutely crushed one for her first long ball of the season.
Volpe was 3-for-4 on the day with all three hits going for extra bases. She added two triples to her home run for 10 total bases on the day.
Bucknell had eight extra-base hits in the game. Ryanne Rokos tripled, while Jess Hom had a double. The team had 13 hits total, including a pair of singles by Julienne Egofske. Marisa Alemany, Anna Gimmestad, and Ava Fairbanks had one single apiece.
Violet Matlock made her first career start and picked up the win. She went four innings and allowed one earned run. The freshman gave up four hits, didn't walk a batter, and struck out two.
Howard dropped to 3-12 on the season.
Harvard 9, Bucknell 8 (12 innings)
Five runs were scored in extra innings before Harvard plated the game-winning run on a swinging bunt in the bottom of the 12th. The Crimson upped their record to 3-3.
Bucknell had a chance to win when it scored twice in the top of the 10th inning on an RBI double by Fairbanks and an RBI single by Wolfgang, but Harvard responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning.
The international tiebreaker rules were in effect, meaning each team started with a runner on second in extra innings, but Harvard managed to hold the Bison scoreless in the top of the 11th. The Crimson led off the bottom half of the inning with a single to put runners on the corners. The Bison nearly got out of the jam with a groundout to shortstop and got the runner out at home attempting to advance. Kaitlyn Schiffhauer moved a runner to third with a two-out double, and Morgan Melito followed with the infield single to score the game-winning run.
Matlock took the loss but pitched solid in 5.2 innings of relief. She gave up two runs, one of which was earned, on seven hits and one walk. She struck out five. The Bison pitching staff had 10 strikeouts in the game as starter Raeanne Geffert had five in her five innings of work.
Harvard led 6-3 after five innings thanks to a solo homer by Teagan Shaw in the bottom of the fifth. Bucknell responded with three runs in the top of the sixth that helped the game eventually go extra innings. Egofske had a two-run double, and Volpe tied it with an RBI single that scored Halie Mariano.
