SCHEDULE UPDATE: Bucknell will now play Niagara in a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 12 p.m.  The two teams were originally scheduled to play one game each on Saturday and Sunday.
LEWISBURG, Pa.—A cold, chilly Friday afternoon proved bountiful for the Bison offense as JohnPaul Bell knocked in four runs to support a combined one-hit effort from starter Jack Grabek and reliever Nate Grisius. The Bison, 14-1 victors on the day, won their first game of the season in commanding style in the home debut for the Orange and Blue.Â
The Bison plated three in the bottom of the first inning after what seemed like an innocuous start for the Purple Eagles suddenly swung in favor of the Bison.
Starting pitcher Matthew Brash for the Purple Eagles fanned the first three batters he faced, but a dropped third strike on a wild pitch allowed Toso to reach first base before advancing another bag on a second wild pitch.  Â
Bell then stepped up and rapped a single to right center to score Toso and give Bucknell a 1-0 lead.
After Bell stole second, Evan Klugerman delivered a double down the right field line to score Bell and double the Bison advantage. Klugerman then got a great jump to steal third base shortly after.  Â
An error by Niagara then allowed Klugerman to score from third to conclude the Bison tallies for the inning.Â
Niagara responded with a run of its own in the top of the second after Benny Serrano scored on a double play from third base to cut the Bison lead to 3-1.Â
That was the closest the Purple Eagles would get, as Grabek worked himself out of multiple jams throughout the beginning stages of the game, including inducing the double play in the second to help get out of a runners on first and third with no outs situation.       Â
Bucknell extended its lead by a run in the third after Bell reached on a Niagara error. Chris Cannizzaro then singled to right field to score Bell, and Cannizzaro hustled all the way around to third when the ball got away at the plate. . Â
Bell was at it again in the fourth inning as the Bison pulled away with three more runs in the fourth. The Downingtown, Pa. native knocked a stinging triple down the left field line that plated pinch runner PJ Strahm and Caleb Broughton. Â
Bucknell added two more runs with a run each in the sixth and the seventh. The RBI in the sixth came courtesy of a Dominic Toso double to left center that scored Strahm. In the seventh, Cannizzaro doubled home Evan Klugerman, who led off the frame with a double of his own.Â
Bucknell sealed the win with a big eighth inning, plating five runs on two hits. PJ Strahm, Tyler Wincig, and Dominic Toso loaded the bases with no outs on an error, hit by pitch, and a walk before Bell was plunked by a pitch for his fourth RBI of the day.  Â
Pinch hitter Marc Chernin cleared the bases with a double to right center to score three runs before Evan Madigan capped off the inning with a single that scored Jared Drizin, who pinch ran for Chernin.  Â
Nate Grisius came on in relief for starter Jack Grabek over the final two innings, retiring the final six Niagara batters in order to help seal the Bison win. Â
Grabek (1-2) earned the win on the mound for Bucknell after pitching seven innings and allowing just one hit while striking out a season-high eight batters. Grabek also settled in and retired nine consecutive batters at one point spanning from the third inning to the sixth after the initial jam in the second.     Â
Bell finished 2-for-4 with four RBI, including his fourth career triple.  Klugerman, Cannizzaro, and Broughton also posted multiple-hit games for the Bison. In total, Bucknell mustered 12 hits to Niagara's one, and benefited from five Purple Eagle errors. Â
The Bison (1-7) will look to complete the three-game set in a doubleheader vs. the Purple Eagles on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. Â
