LEWISBURG, Pa. – Kaitlyn Slagus, Kate Walker and Taylor O'Brien scored 10 points apiece and all 13 Bison registered at least two points as the Bucknell women's basketball team posted a convincing 75-43 victory over Lafayette Saturday afternoon at Sojka Pavilion. The Bison won their ninth straight game to improve to 19-4 on the season and 10-1 in Patriot League play. The Leopards fell to 7-15, 2-9 in league play.
Bucknell's senior class of Slagus, Walker, Rachel Dumiak, Kyi English, and Maegan Mikkelsen became the winningest class in program history, improving to 93-28 during their illustrious careers with the Bison. That breaks the previous record of 92 wins set by last year's senior class of Carly Richardson and Catherine Romaine.
"What they've done from a record standpoint, especially in the league, over their three-and-a-half years here is outstanding," Bucknell head coach Aaron Roussell said. "They've taken pride in seeing the work ethic from the players that have come through here and have made sure to keep that standard of what we need to hold ourselves to."
The Bison seniors need seven more wins to break the Patriot League record of 99 set by Army West Point's 2016 graduating class.
Bucknell limited Lafayette to four points in the first quarter and led 20-4 after 10 minutes of play. The Bison stretched the lead to 41-17 at the half and their final 32-point margin was the largest of the game.
Bucknell's defense forced 21 turnovers and the Bison scored 24 points off those miscues. Bucknell turned the ball over just eight times.
Kyi English had a solid game with eight points and five assists, all of which came in the first half while Bucknell built its commanding lead. Slagus pulled down a team-high eight rebounds. Ellie Mack contributed nine points and five rebounds, while Abby Kapp tallied six boards.
Natalie Kucowski led Lafayette with nine points and 11 rebounds, but the Bucknell defense did an exceptional job on the sophomore standout, holding her to 3-of-15 shooting.
Led by O'Brien, who also scored in double-digits against Lafayette earlier this season, Bucknell received 34 points from its bench. Maegan Mikkelsen had five points on 2-of-2 shooting, while Ally Johnson added five points and three assists.
"We've talked about how much we like our depth and how from 8-13 on the roster we are just as good as anybody out there," Roussell said. "Our bench really came through last time we played Lafayette and helped us win that game, and today was really balanced."
Both Walker and English moved closer to the 1,000-point milestone for their careers. Walker is up to 993 points, while English is at 966. Slagus moved into 10th on the program's all-time scoring list with 1,352 points and is fifth in rebounds with 878.
Bucknell goes on the road to play Lehigh on Wednesday at 6 p.m. The Mountain Hawks dropped to 15-7 overall and 7-4 in the Patriot League after having their four-game winning streak snapped with a 52-48 loss to Boston University.
