BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- All five Bucknell starters scored in double-figures, including a game-high 17 points by Kaitlyn Slagus, as the Bison women's basketball team rallied for a 73-68 win over Lehigh at Stabler Arena on Wednesday night. The Bison won their 10th-straight game to improve to 20-4 overall and 11-1 in the Patriot League, while the Mountain Hawks dipped to 15-8 overall and 7-5 in the conference.
Kate Walker scored 11 points and became the 24th player in program history to reach the 1,000-point career milestone. She accomplished the feat with a free throw midway through the third quarter.
Bucknell trailed 50-47 after three quarters, but Ellie Mack scored the first seven points for the Bison in the fourth quarter to help her team take a 54-50 lead. The Bison led by as many as 13, 68-55, in the fourth quarter following a 3-pointer by Kapp and a free throw by Walker.
"It was great to see our group have to bounce back from a deficit and some adversity in the third quarter," Bucknell head coach Aaron Roussell said. "That's a character-building win and a toughness test. I was proud of how we responded."
Mack finished with 16 points, while Abby Kapp scored 14 on 5-of-6 shooting, including a 4-for-5 night from beyond the arc. It was her 11th game this season with at least three 3-pointers. Kyi English joined them in double-figures with 11 points.
Slagus, who was also 5-of-6 from the field for the game, scored 12 points in the first half to help Bucknell take a 34-29 lead at the break. The Bison led 34-22 with 2:55 to play in the second quarter, but the Mountain Hawks went on a 14-0 run that extended into the third quarter to go up 36-34.
Lehigh upped its lead to seven with 3:14 remaining in the third quarter, and then it was Bucknell's turn to make a comeback. The Bison went on a 6-0 run with two points apiece from Kapp, Mack, and English to get within one, and would trail by three at the end of the third quarter before Mack took over in the fourth.
"We knew this would be a tough game and it definitely was," Roussell said. "We threatened to break away a couple of times in the first half, but each time Lehigh found a way to make a run of their own."
The Bison did a large chunk of their scoring at the foul line, hitting 25 of their 29 attempts for the game. They shot 21-of-24 from the line in the second half. Mack was a perfect 8-for-8 from the game, while English made all six of her attempts and Slagus was flawless on her five chances.
One game after all 13 Bucknell players scored, the Bison starters combined for 69 of the team's 73 points.
"The starters were great, but there were some important stretches and contributions from our bench, too," Roussell said. "Marly (Walls) gave us a boost, and I think (Rachel) Dumiak's minutes in the third really changed the game for us and got us back in it."
Dumiak had a great play as Bucknell began to come back late in the third quarter. She poked the ball away from behind as Lehigh brought it up the court and then found Mack inside for a bucket at the other end, bringing the Bison within three, 48-45.
Lehigh entered as the top defensive team in the Patriot League, allowing 55.3 points per game. Bucknell, which has the league's top scoring offense, scored over 70 points on the Mountain Hawks for the second time this season.
Gena Grundhoffer paced Lehigh with 17 points and four assists. Camryn Buhr scored 12 points, while Hailey Pascoe finished with 12 and Mary Clougherty scored 10.
Slagus and Mack both had solid all-around performances. Slagus added eight rebounds, three blocks, and two steals to her scoring total, while Mack finished with six boards, four assists, three blocks, and a steal. English contributed four assists and two steals. Kapp had six boards for the second straight game.
Bucknell has now had a double-digit winning streak in four consecutive seasons.
The Bison are home against Colgate on Saturday at 2 p.m. The team's five seniors will be honored prior to the game. It was also be the team's annual Play4Kay game.
