Baseball Falls to Radford in Rain-Delayed Contest

SPARTANBURG, S.C.-- The Bucknell University baseball team dropped its opening game of the weekend, 9-1, in a neutral-site contest against Radford on Saturday afternoon at Wofford College.

Bucknell falls to 0-4 with the loss.

The Bison faced an uphill battle early on, with the Highlanders plating three runs on a solitary hit in the bottom of the first inning to take an early 3-0 lead.

Bucknell had a promising start to the top of the second to look to respond, with JohnPaul Bell singling through the left side to get things going. Freshman Chris Cannizzaro then knocked his third double of the season down the left field line to move Bell to third.   Alex Baumann then walked on four straight pitches to load the bases with no outs.

However, the Highlanders managed a double play on a quick line out and grabbed the third out on a fly ball to right field to escape the jam.

Radford then grabbed three more runs in the bottom of the fourth to extend its lead to 6-0, before an hour-and-a-half-long rain delay pushed back the proceedings. After the intermission, the Highlanders added another insurance run to take a 7-0 lead after five.

The Bison got on the board in the eighth when Dominic Toso singled to right field to start the inning before moving to second on a groundout. Bell, the next batter, walked before Toso advanced to third on a wild pitch. The two then each stole a bag on the next play, with Toso stealing home and Bell stealing second for the Bison's only run of the game.

However, the Highlanders closed out the game to win 9-1 and give the Bison their fourth consecutive loss to open the season. Bucknell was 4-1 in its last five games played in the state of South Carolina heading into the matchup dating back to the 2015 season. The Bison started 0-6 a season ago, but managed to win two out of their next three after that.

Toso and Cannizzaro each finished with two hits, while Caleb Broughton, Miles Moore, Bell, and Tyler Wincig mustered the other hits for the Bison. Bucknell left nine men on base, and outhit the Highlanders 9-8 overall. Jack Grabek (0-2) took the loss on the mound for the Bison.

Bucknell will play two games on Sunday starting with a 10 a.m. first pitch against Pittsburgh before playing Radford at 1:30 p.m. Both games will take place at Wofford.
