Baseball Prepares for Three Games in Spartanburg This Weekend

LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell University baseball team will once again head south for three games as it takes on Wofford, USC Upstate, and Pittsburgh in three nonconference matchups Friday through Sunday.

SETTING THE SCENE
What: Bucknell (0-3, 0-0 PL) at Wofford (2-1, 0-0 SOCON), at USC Upstate (2-2, 0-0 Big South), vs. Pittsburgh (1-3, 0-0 ACC)

When: at Wofford- Friday, Feb. 22, 5 p.m.
              at USC Upstate, Saturday, Feb. 23, 4 p.m.
              vs. Pittsburgh (Spartanburg, S.C.) Sunday, Feb. 24. 11 a.m.

Bison Notes

Bucknell faced another tough opening weekend series at NC State, ranked No. 21 at the time.
Chris Cannizzaro and Caleb Broughton each picked up their first career hits in the series against NC State. Cannizzaro posted a double in his first collegiate at-bat in the third inning of game one, while Broughton also picked up his first career hit on a double in the top of the eighth.
The Bison last won a game against an ACC opponent on Feb. 14, 2015 against Wake Forest.
The Bison will once again have an ACC opponent this weekend in Pitt, a team that they are 20-27 against overall.
Wofford, Bucknell's first opponent, hails from the Southern Conference while USC Upstate is a member of the Big South Conference
Bucknell last faced a team from the SOCON in 2017, where the Bison went 1-2 in a three-game set at VMI on Feb. 24-26.
In Bucknell's win, a 4-0 triumph, senior pitcher Jeff Gottesman carried a shutout into the seventh inning while Bucknell posted a then season-high ten hits.
Gottesman allowed just two hits and struck out eight in the win.
Dominic Toso has accumulated four hits and four runs scored to date this season and is batting .364.
Toso's single in the seventh inning of game three at NC State gave the Bison a 5-4 lead for their first lead in the series, and he went three-for-four in the game.
JohnPaul Bell will look to continue the momentum from a big game three against NC State where he went three-for-five from the plate and drove in five runs.
After a tough start to game three, Jack Simpson settled in for the final four innings of the 6.1 that he pitched, scattering just three hits while adding three strikeouts and retiring the last three hitters he faced before being replaced with one gone in the bottom of the seventh.

About Wofford/Series History

The Terriers are 2-1 this season after taking two out of three from Ohio University.
Mike Brown leads the way for the Terriers, hitting .556 with five hits in nine at-bats.
Lawson Hill has picked up four RBIs for Wofford this season and has the most hits on the team with six.
This will be the first-ever meeting for Bucknell against Wofford.

About USC Upstate/Series History

The Spartans are 2-2 this season after splitting a four-game series at home against Kansas.
Drake Harper is hitting .357 and has three RBIs this season.
The Spartans have played in several close encounters early on in the season, with three of the four games against the Jayhawks being decided by two runs or less.
This will also be the first-ever meeting between Bucknell and USC Upstate.

About Pittsburgh/Series History

The Bison have played Pittsburgh 47 times, owning a 20-27 record all-time against the Panthers.
However, the two teams last met almost 20 years ago in 1999, a 5-4 loss for the Bison in Homestead, Fla., on March 13.
Pittsburgh is 1-3 this season after defeating Villanova in its opening game before losing to Iowa, Marshall, and Milwaukee.
