The Bison fall to 0-3 with the loss.
After a scoreless first inning, the Wolfpack got on the board first in the bottom of the second inning with four runs on four hits and capitalizing on two errors by the Bison.
After facing the early deficit, the Bison picked up three runs in the top of the third after Tyler Wincig was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Back-to-back walks by Dominic Toso and Evan Klugerman, coupled with a wild pitch, gave JohnPaul Bell a bases loaded opportunity with two outs. Bell stepped up accordingly, knocking a single to left field to score both Toso and Wincig from second. Jack Schuler then stepped up in the next at-bat and singled through the left side to score Klugerman and cut the NC State lead to 4-3 after three innings.
The two teams remained at that score until the top of the seventh when Caleb Broughton got things started with a single through the left side. Wincig then posted a double to left center to score Broughton from first and tie the game at four.
After Wincig stole third, Toso singled through the right side to score Wincig from third and give the Bison their first lead over NC State in the series. Bell added two more runs on a home run to left field to give the junior two more RBI on the day and Bucknell a 7-4 lead entering the bottom of the seventh.
However, the Wolfpack wouldn't go away quietly, using seven runs on five hits in the bottom of the frame, including a grand slam from Lawson McArthur, to take an 11- 7 lead after seven. The Wolfpack then added another run on a solo shot in the eighth inning to lead 12-7 with the Bison down to their last batters.
The Bison made it interesting late, with Wincig once again being hit by a pitch to reach before being moved to second on another single by Toso. The two then advanced a bag after a groundout, before Bell came up with another single to score Wincig from third and cut the lead to 12-8.
A walk by pinch hitter Ben Smith loaded the bases with two outs, but the Wolfpack earned the last out to hang on for the 12-8 win.
Bell posted a big day for the Bison, going three-for-five from the plate with a home run and five RBI. He also added a run scored. Toso also posted three hits, an RBI, and two runs scored. Wincig notched a multi-hit day for Bucknell and three runs scored.
Starter Jack Simpson pitched 6.1 innings with four strikeouts, while Wincig (0-1), took the loss on the bump.
The Bison will play three games against Wofford, USC Upstate, and Pittsburgh in Spartanburg, S.C. on Friday, Feb.22- Sunday, Feb. 24.
