VESTAL, N.Y. – The Bucknell wrestling team was topped by Binghamton, 25-17, on Friday night at West Gym.
The Bearcats (8-3, 8-2 EIWA) extended their winning streak to eight duals, using bonus-point victories at 174 and 184 pounds to turn a 16-14 lead into an insurmountable 25-14 advantage. Down 16-0 early, the Bison (6-10, 4-6 EIWA) won three-straight bouts at 149, 157 and 165 pounds to draw within two points but ultimately couldn't complete their comeback.
Matthew Kolonia (149) got Bucknell on the board, scoring a 26-10 technical fall over Kevin Kelly. Kolonia has now collected bonus points in three-straight duals, as he pinned his previous two opponents.
Zach Hartman (157) registered his team-leading ninth pin of the season, bringing Matt Swanson's shoulders to the mat in 2:03. Hartman, who was ranked as high as 10th nationally entering the bout, is now 22-5 on the season, including an unbeaten 10-0 in EIWA action.
D.J. Hollingshead (165) drew the Bison within two points with his 6-2 decision over Chris Barker. But a major decision by Vincent DePrez (174) and a technical fall by No. 8 Lou DePrez (184) put the dual out of Bucknell's reach.
In the dual finale Drew Phipps (197) extended his winning streak to 10 bouts with a 7-3 decision over Anthony DePrez. Tied 2-2 entering the third period, Phipps scored two takedowns to dispatch DePrez. Phipp's victory was his 20th of the season; he is now two wins away from matching his career high, set last season.
Nate Feyrer made his 2018-19 dual debut at heavyweight; the sophomore, who started against Pittsburgh as a freshman, became the 19th different Bison to start in dual competition this season.
The Bison next host Columbia for Senior Day on Saturday, Feb. 23 at 12 p.m. Before the dual, they will recognize seniors Hollingshead, Christian Bassolino, Ben Bliss, Kyle Greene, Mike Macklin, Andrew Millsap, Frank Satriale and Nick Stephani. The next day, they travel to Bloomsburg for a 1 p.m. dual, their last of the 2018-19 campaign.
