LEWISBURG, Pa. – Despite winning the final four bouts, the Bucknell wrestling team was clipped by Columbia, 20-16, on Saturday at Davis Gym.
The Lions (9-5, 5-5 EIWA) built a 20-0 lead by winning the first six bouts, with two of their victories coming by major decision. That deficit proved too much for the Bison (6-11, 4-7 EIWA) to overcome despite a major decision by Drew Phipps (197) and a pin by Brandon Stokes (285) in the final two bouts.Â
Phipps stretched his team-best winning streak to 11 bouts with a 15-4 major decision over Sam Wustefeld. Phipps raced out to a 6-0 lead in the first minute, scoring a takedown and four back points, and never looked back. The junior is now 21-7 on the year, including a team-best 14-3 in dual action; his major decision over Wustefeld was his sixth of the year, two more than the second-place Bison.
Stokes followed up Phipps's win with a pin, bringing Danny Conley's shoulders to the mat with just .09 of a second left on the clock in the second period of their heavyweight finale. Bucknell's other victors were Frankie Guida, Jr. (174) and Kyle Inlander (184); Guida, Jr. got the Bison on the board with a hard-fought 5-1 decision over Max Elling while Inlander used a third-period takedown to edge Brian Bonino, 3-2.
At 141 and 157 pounds, Columbia used late takedowns to emerge victorious. Danny Fongaro clipped Noah Levett (141), 5-4, behind a takedown in the final minute of the third period. More dramatically, Dan Reed upset No. 11 Zach Hartman, 4-2, on a takedown with just two seconds left in regulation. Entering their bout, Hartman and Reed were a combined 43-11 on the season; Reed, a senior, handed Bucknell's freshman star his first EIWA dual loss of the season.
Both Hartman and Phipps wrapped up the EIWA dual season with 10-1 records. Guida Jr.'s victory over Elling was his 15th of the season; he joined Hartman, Phipps and Jacob Ferreira as the only Bison to reach this threshold to date.
Before the dual, the Bison honored seniors Christian Bassolino, Ben Bliss, Kyle Greene, D.J. Hollingshead, Mike Macklin, Andrew Millsap, Frank Satriale and Nick Stephani. They close the regular season tomorrow at Bloomsburg, with the opening bout slated for 1 p.m.
