WEST POINT, N.Y. – Drew Phipps upset No. 4 Rocco Caywood during the Bucknell wrestling team's Sunday dual at Army West Point.
Phipps stunned Caywood by a 7-3 decision, bolstered by a two-point nearfall and a late takedown during the second period. It was Phipps's second career victory over a nationally ranked wrestler and his first at 197 pounds; a year ago, he knocked off No. 16 C.J. LaFragola of Brown, 6-4, in sudden victory overtime at 184 pounds.
Entering his bout with Phipps, Caywood boasted a 21-3 record, including an unblemished 7-0 mark in duals. Two of the senior's losses came to nationally ranked wrestlers.
Phipps's stunning victory was a highlight of a back-and-forth dual that featured four lead changes. The Black Knights (7-2, 6-0 EIWA) edged the Bison (6-9, 4-5 EIWA), 22-19, by winning four of the final five bouts. With a pin, Ben Sullivan (285) sealed the victory for Army West Point, which remained unbeaten in EIWA action.
For Bucknell, David Campbell (133) and Matthew Kolonia (149) each pinned his opponent. Campbell's pin of Lane Peters, which came at the 4:28 mark, was the first of his collegiate career.
In a battle of ranked grapplers, Zach Hartman scored a commanding 8-0 major decision over Lucas Weiland. Entering the bout, Hartman was ranked as high as 10th nationally while Weiland was slotted 20th in The Open Mat poll. Hartman's victory pushed his season total to 21-5, including a 9-0 mark in EIWA dual action and a 5-4 mark against nationally ranked opponents.
Behind Campbell and Kolonia's pins, and Hartman's major decision, Bucknell held a 16-7 advantage at the halfway mark of the dual. Army West Point sent three ranked wrestlers to the mat the rest of the way, with two emerging victorious to help their team complete its comeback.
Phipps now boasts a 19-7 record, including a 12-3 mark in duals. He ranks behind only Hartman in overall victories and is tied with the standout freshman in dual victories. He will ride a team-best nine-bout winning stream, over which he collected bonus points in four bouts, into next weekend's dual.
Freshman Noah Levett (141) made his dual debut against the Black Knights. He became the 18th different Bison to start in dual competition during the 2018-19 campaign.
Bucknell next travels to Binghamton for a 7 p.m. dual on Friday, Feb. 15.
