BATON ROUGE, La. – Bucknell closed a weekend full of top-notch competition with an 8-0 loss in five innings to No. 10 LSU on Sunday in the team's final game at the Tiger Classic.
Bucknell dropped to 1-4 with two of the losses coming to nationally-ranked LSU, one coming to Iowa out of the Big Ten, and one coming to Tulsa, the three-time defending champion in the American Athletic Conference.
LSU improved to 6-0 with all six wins coming by mercy rule.
After giving up hits and runs scored to the first two batters, Bucknell's Raeanne Geffert retired 10 straight LSU hitters. The Tigers broke through for two runs with one out in the bottom of the fourth and then added four more to end the game in the fifth.
Shelbi Sunseri went all five innings in the circle for LSU to improve to 2-0 on the season. She allowed three hits, walked two batters, and struck out three.
Sunseri also paced the LSU offense with a two-run home run. It was her fourth blast in the first six games of the season.
Allyse Volpe, Jess Hom, and Halie Mariano all singled for the Bison.
Hom was Bucknell's top hitter during the season's opening weekend, batting .385 (5-13) with two runs scored. Ava Fairbanks hit .375 (3-8) with a double, and Lauren Hadley hit .308 (4-13).
Bucknell has the next weekend off before returning to action with five games at the Liberty Softball Challenge on Feb. 22-24. The Bison will play Valparaiso, Delaware State, Wright State, Liberty, and Princeton at the event.
