ATLANTA – Catherine Craig and Maggie Wyngowski represented Bucknell at the U.S. Open, held last week at Georgia Tech's McAuley Aquatic Center.
Craig, a freshman, competed in the 100-meter breaststroke (1:15.33) and 200 meter breaststroke (2:42.70). Wyngowski, a junior, swam the 200-meter IM (2:21.21) and 400-meter IM (4:59.50).
Among the elite athletes who attended the U.S. Open were World Record holder Katie Ledecky, defending Olympic and World sprint champion Simone Manuel and 19-time World Champion Caeleb Dressel. Some of the top collegiate swimmers were also in attendance.
This was Wyngowski's third-straight appearance at the U.S. Open, formerly known as the USA Swimming Winter National Championships. In 2018, she swam the 200 IM and 200 breaststroke; in 2017, she competed in the 200 IM, 400 IM and 200 breaststroke.
Wyngowski and Craig returned to Lewisburg in time for the Bucknell Invitational's final day. Wyngowski broke her own school record to win the 200-yard breaststroke, clocking an NCAA 'B' cut time of 2:14.54. Her previous school standard (2:14.98) was set at the 2017 Patriot League Championships and was the first time a Bison cleared 2:15 in that event. Her 100 split improved her personal record to 1:05.05, good for 10th in school history.
Craig also competed in the 200-yard breaststroke's 'A' finals, finishing sixth with a time of 2:18.99 good for sixth in the Bucknell annals.
Craig and Wyngowski, and the rest of the Bison, return to action in the New Year by hosting Johns Hopkins on Friday, Jan. 10 at 2 p.m.
