WORCESTER, Mass. - Bucknell volleyball looked close to winning the third set in Friday evening's match against Holy Cross, but couldn't quite capture the set-winning point to stay alive, and ended up falling 3-0 (25-22, 25-18, 28-26) to the Crusaders. With the loss, the Bison fall to 14-11 on the season.
Although Bucknell only led once during the first two sets, the Bison put together a pair of furious comeback attempts that fell just short. Trailing 9-1 in the first set, the Bison outscored Holy Cross 16-13 with a 3-0 run mixed in to pull within five. The Crusaders reached 24 points, but Bucknell strung together five consecutive points to get within two of tying. However, the effort fell short as Holy Cross took a 1-0 lead in sets.
In the second, the Bison kept the deficit at one throughout the first half of the set and took a 9-8 lead at one point. A 5-0 scoring run by the Crusaders made the score 18-13, and five points was as close as Bucknell would get before the Crusaders took a 2-0 lead in the match.
The Bison, who were fighting to stay alive in the match, led most of the way in the third. A pair of 4-0 runs gave Bucknell a 17-13 lead, which was its largest of the day.
The Crusaders refused to go down, even after facing a set-point three different times. Bucknell held leads of 24-23, 25-24, and 26-25, but each time Holy Cross managed to tie the score. Finally, three consecutive kills by Holy Cross' Katie Kerins put an end to the match, handing the Crusaders their first league win of the season.
The Bison were led by a 12-kill effort from junior Anna Carroll, who maintained a hitting percentage of .259. Senior Sophie Bullard posted nine kills and was one of three Bison with double-digit digs. Also noteworthy was a five-kill outing for Emma Buchanan, who led the team with a .273 percentage, two block assists, and a pair of solo blocks.
The Bison have another road contest tomorrow against Army at 7 p.m. It will be the final road match of the season for Bucknell.
