LEWISBURG, Pa. – Gracie Wall capped off a wild final 2.9 seconds of the first overtime period with the golden goal that sent Columbia to a 2-1 victory over host Bucknell on Tuesday night at Emmitt Field. Freshman Annabelle Heisel scored her first career goal for the Bison, but the Lions scored late in regulation and then in OT to steal the non-conference verdict.
Sophomore Raegan Dunwoodie made her first career start in goal for the Bison, and for a fleeting moment she was the hero of the night when she made a remarkable save on a Maddie Temares penalty kick with 2.9 second left in the first overtime stanza. Dunwoodie, who logged six saves in the match, dove to her left and palmed the ball aside. But it remained in play, Wall got to it first and slotted the rebound off the left post and into the net just before time expired.
Columbia improved to 7-3-1 with the victory, while the Bison fell to 4-9.
Bucknell had the first two good scoring chances of the evening in the 21st minute, and it cashed in on the second. Holly Burns nearly gave the Bison the lead on a corner kick, but a Columbia defender saved her shot off the line.
Moments later right back Alivia Handson floated a high ball back into the area. Two Lions headed the ball, but only as far as Heisel just outside the 18. Heisel took a touch and then slammed a shot just inside the left post to open her collegiate scoring account.
The Bison held strong against some pressure for a good chunk of the second half, but then Rylee Donaldson forced Juliet Allen into a tough save in the 76th minute or it might have been 2-0.
Columbia broke through with 8:41 left in regulation when three players came together for a ball in the Bucknell end of the field. Shira Cohen came away with it and was off to the races on a breakaway. She finished with a chip over the onrushing Dunwoodie to level the match at 1-1.
Columbia finished with a 20-9 shot advantage, including the two in the final 2.9 seconds. There were only three corner kicks in the match, two for Bucknell.
This was Columbia's first-ever trip to Lewisburg. The Lions have now won all four meetings between the two teams by one goal.
It is all Patriot League action for Bucknell for the remainder of the regular season. Next up is a trip to Colgate on Saturday at 2 p.m.
