Marek’s Marker Lifts Women’s Soccer to 1-0 Win at Colgate

HAMILTON, N.Y. – Jenna Marek's 34th-minute header was enough to send the Bucknell women's soccer team to a key 1-0 Patriot League road victory over Colgate on Saturday afternoon at Beyer-Small Field. The Bison are now 3-2 in Patriot League play and at least temporarily jumped into second place pending the results of other matches later in the day.
Bucknell had dropped its last three contests coming into Saturday's game, despite scoring the opening goal in all three. The Bison once again scored first in this one – they have now led in all five Patriot League games this season – and this time they held strong on the back end and saw out the 1-0 verdict against a longtime nemesis.
Playing in a light but chilly rain, the Bison survived some early pressure as Kaylee Donnelly made her first save of the day in the 14th minute, and then about 90 seconds later Abby Sotomayor shook loose only to ring a shot off the crossbar. Hannah Pinkus then pulled the follow-up attempt wide.
The Bison nearly cashed in on their first corner kick of the day in the 25th minute, but Holly Burns' header was cleared off the line by Abbie Grady at the right post.
Nine minutes later, Bucknell did grab that lead. The Bison earned a throw-in deep in the right corner, where Ali Russo made a short throw to Emilene Parham, who returned the ball back to Russo. The Bison captain played a high ball into the six-yard box, where Marek out-jumped both a fullback and the goalkeeper to nod the ball in for her first goal of the season and sixth of her career.
Donnelly made five of her six saves in the second half, but all were fairly routine catches on shots from distance. Colgate's best look at goal was a left-footed strike from Dom DeMarco in the 66th minute, but Donnelly was well-positioned at the left post.
Sophia Boggs, who relieved starter Kelly Chiavaro at halftime, made one save in the second half on a 74th-minute attempt from Abby Gearhart.
Colgate fell to 1-8-3 on the season, with six of the losses coming by one goal. This was Bucknell's ninth win against Colgate in 34 all-time meetings. The Bison last won in back-to-back seasons in 2015 and 2016, before the Raiders captured each of the last two. Head coach Kelly Cook improved to 3-2 against her alma mater.
Bucknell now has a week off to prepare for first-place Navy. The Bison and Mids will meet in Annapolis next Saturday at 11 a.m.
