ANNAPOLIS, Md. – First-place Navy topped second-place Bucknell 1-0 on a Carolyn Mang overtime tally on Saturday morning at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility. The Mids improved to 4-1-1 in Patriot League play and now have a league-high 13 points, while the Bison (3-3-0) remain on nine points with two big home games coming up next week.
Bucknell was under duress for much of the match, as Navy totaled 26 shots. Freshman goalkeeper Kaylee Donnelly made five saves, and her teammates were able to block a handful of other dangerous balls out of harm's way.
Navy nearly took the lead late in the first half when Gabby Gordon hit the post, Donnelly denied Cadie Higginson on the rebound, and then a third attempt went off the crossbar. The Bison almost answered a minute later, but Chloe Christakos saw her header go over the bar on a free kick.
Abby Gearhart tested Navy keeper Sydney Fortson just over two minutes into the second half, but that would be Fortson's only save of the day.
Navy hit another post in the 65th minute and Donnelly made a save in the 75th. Mang had a look with about 30 seconds left regulation but shot wide.
Donnelly made a save on Basely McClaskey early in the overtime period, and Jeana Freeman shot high on the ensuing corner kick. The Mids earned another corner in the 96th minute, and this time they converted, as Mang headed in McClaskey's back-post service.
Bucknell hosts Loyola on Wednesday night at Emmitt Field. The Greyhounds entered the weekend tied for third place on eight points. The Bison will then entertain American on Saturday at 1 p.m. on Senior Day.
