About the Bison
- Perhaps the most exciting and important week of the 2019 season has arrived, with Loyola and American visiting Emmitt Field with six critical points up for grabs. Three games remain on the regular-season slate, and two of them come this week, with Loyola up first on Wednesday night, followed by a Senior Day clash with American on Saturday afternoon.
- The Bison are looking to bounce back after a tough 1-0 overtime loss at first-place Navy on Saturday. Bucknell entered that game just a single point behind the Mids for the Patriot League lead, but that loss, combined with other results around the league, dropped the Bison into a tie for fourth place with Lehigh in a crowded table. The top six teams qualify for the Patriot League Tournament, and the top two receive byes into the semifinals.
- Navy sits atop the standings with 13 points, with Loyola second with 11 points and Army third with 10. Bucknell and Lehigh are next with nine points each, so the Bison could jump back in front of Loyola with a victory on Wednesday.
- Saturday's loss at Navy snapped Bucknell's streak at seven straight games scoring at least one goal, as well as a run of six straight games in which the Bison held the lead.
- Bucknell's 13 goals this season have come from nine different players. Gabby Bair leads the way with three goals, and Chloe Christakos and Abby Gearhart have two each.
- Seven freshmen have started at least one game and five have registered at least one point for the Bison this season.
- Senior midfielder/defender Ali Russo has played all 1,381 minutes this season. Russo, in her second year as team captain, has played in 75 career games with 73 starts to lead all active Bison players.
- Bucknell's five seniors and their families will be recognized prior to Saturday's game. The class of Bair, Russo, Lilly Courts, Bailey Hurst and Dani Kaufman have taken part in 40 victories and two conference championships thus far.
- Head coach Kelly Cook is in her fifth season in Lewisburg. Cook has a 51-37-6 overall record and a 29-10-2 mark against Patriot League competition. Cook's .574 winning percentage is the highest in team history, and she needs one more wins to catch Toby Lovecchio for third-most in program history.
- Bucknell has finished .500 or better in Patriot League play in each of the last six seasons. The Bison have also qualified for the Patriot League Tournament in each of those six seasons and 21 times overall. The 21 PL postseason appearances is tied with Navy for second-most in league history, trailing only Colgate with 26. Bucknell has advanced to the championship game six times and is 4-2 in those appearances, with the league titles coming in 2001, 2005, 2016 and 2017.
- Bucknell was picked tied for fifth (with Army West Point) in the Patriot League Preseason Poll. Boston University was selected as the preseason favorite, followed by Colgate, Navy and Lehigh.
About Loyola/Series History
- The Greyhounds have been one of the league's surprise teams in 2019. After being picked seventh in the Patriot League Preseason Poll, Loyola enters the week sitting solo second with three games remaining.
- In Patriot League play, Loyola owns wins over Lehigh (1-0), American (3-1) and Lafayette (3-1) and draws with Holy Cross (1-1) and Boston University (0-0). The Greyhounds' lone PL loss was a 1-0 overtime setback at Army on Oct. 12.
- The Greyhounds enter Wednesday's game ranked third in the league in scoring at 1.14 goals per game, despite attempting the fewest shots per game (9.64).
- Loyola boasts the Patriot League's top scorer in senior Hannah Hoefs, who tops the conference in both goals (7) and points (17). Hoefs, who transferred from Maryland prior to her sophomore year, was Third Team All-Patriot League selection after scoring six goals last season. She has scored three of her seven goals this year against Patriot League foes (Lehigh, American, Lafayette).
- Loyola has another dangerous scorer in Sarah Bayer, who ranks fourth in the league in goals (4) and sixth in points (10). Bayer was a Second Team All-Patriot League pick as a freshman a year ago.
- Bucknell is 6-3-1 all-time against Loyola, but 6-0 since the Greyhounds joined the Patriot League in 2013. In that six-game winning streak, the Bison have outscored the Greyhounds 13-2 with four straight shutouts. Bucknell enters Wednesday's game with a 384:28 scoreless streak in head-to-head play against Loyola.
- Prior to becoming Patriot League cohorts, Bucknell and Loyola played home-and-home sets in 1992-93 and 2007-08. The Greyhounds won the first three series meetings, and the teams played to a 2-2 deadlock in 2008.
- Last season, the Bison won 1-0 on a goal in the 75th minute.
- Two of Gabby Bair's 10 career goals have come against Loyola. Bair scored in Bucknell's 3-0 away wins in 2016 and 2017. The only other Bison with a point against the Greyhounds is Bailey Hurst, who assisted on Bair's goal in 2016.
About American/Series History
- The Eagles enter the week 5-7-3 overall and 0-3-3 in Patriot League play, and they host Navy on Wednesday afternoon before traveling to Lewisburg.
- The Eagles are the only side that has yet to win a Patriot League game, but they do have three draws against Colgate (2-2), Holy Cross (1-1) and Lafayette (1-1).
- American has found goal-scoring of late with at least one tally in seven straight games, but it has conceded 13 goals in that span.
- Freshman Fisayo Iluyomade leads the team with four goals, all coming in the team's first four games of the season. Emily Smith has three tallies, all coming during Patriot League play. Smith converted a penalty kick for American's lone goal in Saturday's 3-1 loss to Army.
- American has used three goalkeepers this season, with Ryleigh Brown starting six games, Amy Krotine five games and Morgan Lang four games. Brown and Lang each played a half in the Eagles' most recent encounter with Army.
- Bucknell is 11-8-1 in the all-time series with American, which started when the Eagles joined the Patriot League in 2001. The Bison have won the last five in the series by a combined margin of 15-2.
- These two teams met last season in D.C. in the early part of the league slate, and the Bison rallied to win 2-1 after conceding a goal to Yari Bradfield just 1:50 into the match. Jenna Marek scored the equalizer in the 20th minute, and then Maddie Dano scored directly from a corner kick in the 26th. Dano's "Olimpico" held up as the game-winner as the Bison received eight saves from Theresa Adu-Attobrah and also saw two defenders make saves off the goal line.
- In the last meeting at Emmitt Field in 2017, the Bison turned in a dominant 4-0 victory. Kendall Ham scored twice in that game, but one of the highlights of the day was a stunning goal from about 40 yards out by Lilly Courts.
- Bailey Hurst and Gabby Bair are two more active players who have scored goals against American. Both tallied In a 5-1 Bison win in Lewisburg in 2016. Ali Russo added an assist on the Bair goal.
- Following the two home games this week, Bucknell wraps up the regular season on Saturday, Nov. 1 at Holy Cross at 5 p.m.
