LEWISBURG, Pa. – Gabby Bair scored her team-leading third goal of the season to give the Bison the lead midway through the first half, but Army West Point equalized before intermission, went ahead on an Alyssa Carfagno goal in the 68th minute, and held on to defeat Bucknell 2-1 in Patriot League women's soccer action on Saturday at Emmitt Field.
The loss dropped the Bison to 2-2 in Patriot League play, while Army improved to 1-2-1 in the league and snapped a five-game series losing streak to Bucknell.
The Black Knights had the Bison under pressure in the opening five minutes of the match and nearly took the lead in the fourth minute, but Lauren Drysdale's shot from distance hit the crossbar.
Bucknell found its legs soon after, with Jenna Marek just missing the right post with a header from Ali Russo's free kick from the left corner. Then in the 22nd minute the Bison did cash in on a nice passing combo. Right back Alivia Handson served Bri Kropinack inside the right edge of the area. Kropinack was able to turn and thread a pass back up to the top of the box, where Bair smashed a shot that went off the fingertips of goalkeeper Sydney Cassalia and into the back of the net.
It was Bair's 10th career goal, and Handson's assist marked her first career point.
Bucknell's lead lasted for only about 13 minutes, however, as Army scored on a similar buildup at the other end. This time is was Drysdale squaring a pass across to Sydney Shafer, who ran on from her left back position and slotted home her first career goal.
The Bison had a great chance to take the lead in the 56th minute when Bair was hauled down in the box, but Cassalia denied Abby Gearhart from the spot with a diving save to her left.
On the 66th-minute corner kick, Chloe Christakos headed one off the left post and then pushed the quick rebound wide. Just two minutes later, Army was awarded a corner of its own, and the Black Knights cashed in. Dara Murray's delivery was flicked away by a Bison defender in the area, but only as far as Carfagno at the top of the 18. Carfagno volleyed an arcing shot back over the scrum and into the net to give the visitors a 2-1 lead.
With about nine minutes remaining, Kropinack was well-positioned on the near post for a possible deflection, but it was blocked aside by Army's last defender, and the Bison could not convert on their fourth corner kick of the night.
Marek won two balls in dangerous positions, one on the left flank and won on the right, in the final few minutes but could not connect with a teammate on the receiving end.
Army finished with a slim 15-14 edge in shots and a 9-4 lead in corner kicks. Cassalia tallied five saves for the Black Knights, while Bucknell keeper Kaylee Donnelly nabbed two saves.
Bucknell's final non-conference game of the regular season comes on Tuesday at home against Columbia at 6 p.m.
