Men's Soccer Battles to 0-0 Draw Against Army on Senior Day

LEWISBURG, Pa. – A penalty kick save by freshman Luke Smith in the 38th minute of the first half highlighted a closely-contested, physical, 0-0 draw between Army and Bucknell on a rain-soaked evening at Emmitt Field.
Bucknell, now 5-5-5 on the season, extend its unbeaten streak to five after two consecutive draws in the past five days.
Bucknell started the game brightly, with freshman Eddie Perez-Pelaez, making back-to-back starts for the first time since Sept. 6, had a low shot on a great cross from the right side at the 6:58 mark of the first half . Perez-Pelaez found some space at the six-yard box and tapped a shot that looked destined to go in, but Army goalkeeper Jacob Suppiah made a great play to corral the ball from behind him and keep the ball out.
Army had its best chance of the half after winning a penalty near the top of the box at the 37:56 mark. Oscar Pereira stepped up and drove a low shot to Smith's left, but the freshman did well to hold onto the shot and prevent a rebound opportunity and keep the game scoreless heading into halftime.
Army had a great look at goal just three minutes into the second half on a ball from the right side cut back across the top of the 18. However, Dany Teran, one of seven seniors honored on Senior Day, made a great sliding interception to deny a great opportunity for the Black Knights.
Just two minutes later in the 50thminute, senior Nick King played a nice long pass to fellow senior Bernie Wright, who made a long run down towards the end line before rocketing the right post as the ball skidded across the goalmouth and out of play.
Smith was involved again later on in the second half, coming up with two huge saves coming out to his left side of the box to deny Keenan O'Shea in the 62nd, before making a similar save to thwart Sam Epitime just five minutes later. Smith, who was second in the Patriot League in goals against average coming in, earned his third clean sheet of the season.
The center back pairing of Quinn Bredin and Trevor Wiggins put in a solid performance, helping limit the Black Knights to just four shot on target in difficult conditions.
Sophomore Alex Clarke had a decent look at goal in the 77th minute after finding space at the top of the box on a nice backheel from Perez-Pelaez. Clarke's low shot skipped across the ground, but Suppiah was there once again to collect the shot.
Perez-Pelaez looked to have won the game in the 82nd minute, getting his head on a cross that was cleared off the line by Army defender Zac McGraw. Bucknell went into overtime for the second consecutive game, after a 1-1 draw against Binghamton on Tuesday.
Matt Thorsheim had the best chance of the first overtime period for Bucknell, curling a shot at the near post that just flashed wide on a cross cut back. The shot would be one of just two for Bucknell in the overtime periods as it went on to draw, 0-0.
Bucknell is now 3-1-1 in its last five matchups against Army, and is now fifth in the standings on nine points, tied with Boston University. Bucknell holds the tiebreaker against the Terriers after defeating Boston U 3-0 on Sunday, and is three points behind Lafayette for fourth.
Army outshot Bucknell 14-7 while holding a 4-3 advantage in shots on goal.
Bucknell will now travel to Cornell on Tuesday before playing the Leopards on Saturday, Nov. 2 at 7 p.m.
