Bucknell Women’s Soccer Draws American 1-1 on Senior Day

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Freshman Abby Gearhart scored a first-half equalizer off a beautiful cross from Gabby Bair, but Bucknell could not find a go-ahead goal despite controlling play for most of the second half and overtime and settled for a 1-1 draw with American on Saturday at Emmitt Field.
The Bison (5-10-2, 3-3-2 PL) had not tied a Patriot League match since 2015, but now have draws in each of their last two contests. Bucknell at least temporarily moved into a tie for third place in the Patriot League standings, but four teams have yet to kick off in this penultimate match day of the regular season.
American (5-8-4, 0-4-4 PL) stunned the Bison with a breakaway goal just 11:09 into the match. Alysa Vazquez played a long ball forward that eluded Bucknell's central defense. Morgan Brinson ran onto the ball at the top of the penalty area and finished for her first goal of the season.
But the Bison leveled the match about 16 minutes later. Bair, one of five Senior Day honorees recognized before the game, carried the ball about 30 yards down the right sideline and eventually unleashed a perfect cross to Gearhart, who one-timed it into the back of the net for her third goal of the season.
Bucknell nearly found a second goal about six minutes later on a nice cross from Annabelle Heisel to Emilene Parham, but the shot went wide.
Kaylee Donnelly made the best of her four saves in the 37th minute after Fisayo Iluyomade got behind the back line. Donnelly charged off her line and made a kick save to keep it 1-1.
The Bison dominated possession in the second half, outshooting American 12-3. Bri Kropinack just missed the top right corner after picking off a clearance early in the period, and later Petie Nassetta saw her deep blast tipped up and off the crossbar by Eagles netminder Ryleigh Brown.
American's initial shot of the second half didn't come until 9:50 remained on the clock – an errant attempt by Samm Francucci – but seconds later Brinson found space along the left side of the area. Donnelly again did well to come out and block aside the shot.
The Bison were buzzing in the 84th minute, as Brown saves two successive shots from Nassetta and Gearhart.
In overtime, Bucknell could not connect on any of five corner kicks. Both keepers were busy, with Brown making three saves and Donnelly two in extra time.
Bucknell finished with a 20-10 lead on the shot board, with Gearhart (6) and Kropinack (4) accounting for half of the home team's total. The Bison also had a 9-1 edge in corner kicks.
Bair, Lilly Courts, Bailey Hurst, Dani Kaufman and Ali Russo were the five seniors who played their final regular-season game at Emmitt Field.
The Bison wrap up the regular season on Friday at Holy Cross. Saturday night's Lehigh-Army game and Sunday's Lafayette-Holy Cross game will help shape the Patriot League Tournament picture heading into the final weekend.
