WORCESTER, Mass. – Caroline Harkins scored the first of Holy Cross' three second-half goals to send the Crusaders on their way to a 3-0 verdict over Bucknell to kick off the final weekend of the Patriot League women's soccer regular season.
The Bison and Crusaders began the night in a tie for fourth place. Holy Cross locked up a Patriot League Tournament berth with the win, while Bucknell must wait on other results from around the league that will determine whether the Bison get one of the six postseason berths. The Bison temporarily fell into fifth place with 11 points, but Lehigh (10 points), Lafayette (10) and Colgate (9) are all within striking distance. Lehigh hosts American later on Friday evening, and then Colgate (vs. Army) and Lafayette (vs. Boston University) both play at home on Saturday.
The Bison (5-11-2, 3-4-2) came within an inch of getting on the board in the 18th minute of the match. Gabby Bair got deep into the box and was able to dribble around Holy Cross goalkeeper Sophia Lettieri, but Bair's shot was blocked off the last speck of the goal line by Harkins, and then Abby Gearhart's follow-up attempt sailed over the bar.
Moments later, Bison keeper Kaylee Donnelly made a fine lunging save on Jenna Barnes to keep the game scoreless. Donnelly had to leave the game with about five minutes left in the first half after a collision in the box. Raegan Dunwoodie entered, and only 15 seconds later she was forced to make a diving save to rob Katie Quinn. Dunwoodie denied Quinn again in the 43rd minute on a hard shot to the near post.
Nine minutes into the second half the Crusaders (5-3-8, 3-1-5) broke the ice when Harkins solidly struck a left-footed shot from the top of the penalty area.
Annabelle Heisel shot over the bar just past the hour mark, but the Crusaders tacked on two late goals with the Bison pushed forward looking for an equalizer.
In the 82nd minute, Dunwoodie came off her line to snuff out a through ball from Samantha Peters but she slipped and lost her footing as she arrived, which allowed Quinn to gather the ball and score to make it 2-0.
Bucknell earned a corner kick in the 85th minute but could not convert, and on the counter attack Quinn played in Barnes for a breakaway and a 3-0 lead.
The Crusaders, who remained unbeaten (3-0-5) at home this season, ended Bucknell's 14-game winning streak in the series. Holy Cross also qualified for the Patriot League Tournament for the first time since 2000, when it won the championship.
Dunwoodie made four saves and Donnelly had three for the Bison. Heisel led the team with three shots.
