UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Bucknell University men's cross country team placed 11th (249 points) at the Penn State National Open on Friday morning. Seniors Drew Dorflinger and Jake Stupak led the way for Bucknell in placing in the top 40 competitors in a challenging field.
Dorflinger took the top finish for Bucknell on the day, placing 30th in the field of 115 (26:07.4) in the 5.2-mile race.
Jake Stupak, who placed 13th at last year's Patriot League Championships, was the next-highest finisher for Bucknell (38th, 26:23.4). Stupak, after finishing 68th at this meet last season as Bucknell's top finisher, improved by 30 spots this year.
Brendan O'Toole (58th, 26:50.8), Connor McMenamin (68th, 27:07.7), and Samuel Whittaker (77th, 27:16.0) rounded out Bucknell's scorers.
Temple took the team title on 56 points, besting second-place Penn by 15. The Owls placed four runners in the top ten in the winning effort. Penn State (76), William and Mary (123), and Akron (148), rounded out the top five teams. JP Trojan of William and Mary won the meet by 18 seconds (25.16.0), followed by Anthony Russo of Penn (25:34.0), Caleb Covell of Buffalo (25:35.2), Marc Migliozzi of Akron (25:36.3), and Zach Seiger of Temple (25:36.7).
"Once again, we just had too many key guys not perform to their capabilities," said Head Coach Kevin Donner. "I believe we have a good team, but just have not put it together in a meet yet. Training is going very well, but we have a lot of things we need to work on if we want to reach our goals at the league meet. With that said, I thought Stupak ran well and seems to be coming around. I was also pleased with O'Toole and Whittaker, who is a freshman running at the five spot for us."
Bucknell will compete at one more meet on Saturday at the Leopard Invitational hosted by Lafayette before traveling to the Patriot League Championships hosted by Colgate on Nov. 2.
