The Bison Fall to 10-4 Overall and 1-1 in the Patriot League
LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell women's basketball team lost at home for the first time this season, falling 70-62 to Boston University on Sunday afternoon at Sojka Pavilion. The Terriers are now 6-6 overall and 2-0 in Patriot League play, while the Bison fall to 10-4 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
The Orange and Blue struggled to find an offensive rhythm, shooting 32.7 percent (16-for-49) over the game's first three quarters, while Boston shot 44.2% (19-for-43) over the same span and held a 57-42 lead going into the fourth quarter. Bucknell's fortunes turned in the final stanza, and an 18-5 run cut Boston's lead to two, 62-60, with four minutes, 56 seconds left to play. Nia Irving corralled a loose ball on the other end and converted a lay-up and foul shot to build the Boston lead back up to five. Kyi English, who scored 10 points in the fourth quarter, made a jumper in the paint to make it a one-possession game with 4:18 to go, but the Bison would not score the rest of the game. Three turnovers, three missed field goals and a pair of missed free throws ended the game offensively for Bucknell.
"It was a disappointing game," said Bucknell head coach Aaron Roussell, who dropped to 9-2 against Boston University during his time with the Bison. "Hats off to Boston U.'s staff and players. They were really energized and played really hard. Outside of that first bucket, they were able to take it to us early."
After making eight of their first nine field goals in the fourth quarter, the Bison ended up shooting 39.3 percent (24-for-61) for the game, but only made five of their 23 three-point field goal attempts and 60 percent (9-for-15) of their free throws. Boston only shot 25 percent (4-for-16) in the fourth quarter and 39 percent (23-for-59) for the game, but made nine 3-pointers on 21 attempts and 15 of its 17 foul shots. The Bison assisted on only nine of their 24 made field goals, while Boston assisted on 14 of its 23 made shots. Boston also outrebounded Bucknell, 39-34.
English, Ellie Mack and Kate Walker each scored 13 points for the Bison, while Kaitlyn Slagus had 11 points, seven rebounds, three assists and three blocks. Abby Kapp had eight points, seven rebounds, four steals and a pair of blocks.
The Terriers' starting unit scored all 70 of their points and saw four players play more than 35 minutes. Payton Hauck scored a game-high 20 points to go along with six rebounds. Katie Nelson had 14 points and five rebounds, Irving had 12 points and eight rebounds, and Naiyah Thompson record five points and a game-high 12 rebounds, five coming at the offensive end.
The loss ended Bucknell's nine-game winning streak in the series with Boston University. The Bison senior class still has an impressive league record of 49-7 during their career.
