The Bison Improved to 11-4 Overall and 2-1 in the Patriot League
WEST POINT, N.Y. – Bucknell tallied 19 assists on 26 field goals, and Ellie Mack posted a double-double in the first half alone as the Bison bounced back with a 66-52 win at Army West Point in Patriot League women's basketball action Wednesday night at Christl Arena.
Mack finished with 15 points and matched a career high with 12 rebounds to record her second career double-double for Bucknell, which improved to 11-4 overall and 2-1 in the Patriot League. Kaitlyn Slagus added 16 points and eight rebounds. Kate Walker had 12 points and Abby Kapp totaled 11 to give the Bison four players in double-figures.
"It was a solid road win coming off a tough loss on Sunday," Bucknell head coach Aaron Roussell said. "We showed toughness and grit tonight in what is always a tough battle at Army."
Kyi English and Walker set the offense up with a combined 13 assists to just three turnovers. English had a team-high seven assists while turning the ball over just three times. Walker finished with six assists and zero turnovers.
"I loved seeing the ball move around tonight. We shared the ball well and created some easy opportunities with that movement," Roussell said.
Bucknell outscored Army 20-4 in the second quarter on its way to a 33-14 lead at the break. Mack had a huge first half with 13 points and 11 rebounds, finishing just one board shy of her career high in the first two quarters alone. She was 3-of-4 from beyond the arc.
Slagus had 10 points at the half, while Autumn Ceppi tallied five of her seven points. Kate Walker dished out four assists in the half.
The big second quarter was fueled by an 11-0 run that put Bucknell up 24-12. Slagus and Mack took over during that stretch with Slagus scoring six points and Mack five. The defense was dominant the entire quarter. The Black Knights shot 7.1 percent with a 1-of-14 mark from the floor and turned the ball over five times.
The Bison were strong defensively throughout the game, holding Army to 33.9 percent shooting while forcing six turnovers. English and Walker each had two of the team's eight steals.
Bucknell led by as many as 24 with a 47-23 lead midway through the third quarter. Ten of the team's 11 wins have come by double-digits, including both Patriot League victories.
After struggling to find their touch from beyond the arc last game, the Bison shot 9-of-23 against the Black Knights. They shot 44 percent from the field and added 28 points in the paint.
"We were able to get our posts scoring at the basket and the arc which makes our offense difficult to defend," Roussell said.
Army was led by Madison Hovren with 18 points and nine rebounds, but 13 of those points came in the second half with Bucknell already holding a sizable lead.
Bucknell's senior class improved to 6-1 against the Black Knights, including a 3-1 record at West Point. They are 50-7 in Patriot League play.
Up next for the Bison is a short trip to Lafayette on Saturday at 2 p.m. The Leopards are 6-8 overall and 1-2 in the Patriot League following a 60-49 loss at Colgate.
