LEWISBURG, Pa. – Ally Johnson made all four of her field goal attempts – including all three 3-pointers – to register 11 points off the bench to lead the Bucknell women's basketball team to a 75-71 victory over Holy Cross in a back-and-forth game Saturday afternoon at Sojka Pavilion. Johnson's 3-pointer with 2:14 left gave the Bison the lead (70-69) for good as Bucknell came out on top in a game that featured 11 lead changes.
Bucknell improved to 16-4 overall and 7-1 in the Patriot League as it upped its winning streak to six-straight games. It was the 300th career win for head coach Aaron Roussell, who is in his 15th season overall. He has posted 139 wins in his seven seasons with the Bison.
"It was a hard-fought win. We told them at halftime that good teams need to find a way to win when the other team is playing well," Roussell said. "Big credit to Holy Cross and their coaching staff. We had to step up and really play tough in the second half. The mental toughness was a highlight for this group today."
Johnson was one of four Bison players in double figures as Kaitlyn Slagus tallied 16 points, Ellie Mack had 15 and Kate Walker finished with 10. Mack and Walker tied for the team lead with seven rebounds apiece, while Walker chipped in five assists. She is averaging 6.0 assists over the last two games.
Mack was also clutch late in the game as she hit a 3-pointer to cut Bucknell's deficit to one point with 2:48 to play and later converted a fast-break layup off a long feed from Kyi English to extend the Bison lead to 72-69 with under two minutes to play. She scored seven points in the final quarter.
Bucknell was hot from 3-point range in the second half as it led by as many as seven points in the third quarter. After shooting just 2-of-15 from 3-point range in the first half, the Bison were 6-of-10 in the second half.
Megan Swords led Holy Cross with 17 points, while Lauren Manis recorded a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Autumn Ceppi and Mack did a solid job defending Manis, who is one of the best players in the Patriot League, holding her to 5-of-16 shooting.
The Bison struggled in the first half but stayed within striking distance thanks to some key shots by Rachel Dumiak and English. Dumiak tied the game at 28-28 with a pull-up jumper. Later in the quarter, English drained a 3-pointer to make it a one possession deficit, 36-33, with 12 seconds left on the clock.
Johnson, who didn't attempt a shot during her seven minutes on the floor in the first half, took over late in the third quarter. She scored eight-straight Bucknell points with two 3-pointers and a layup in the final 2:35 to give the Bison a 57-53 lead heading into the fourth.
Bucknell finished the game shooting 45 percent (27-60) from the field and had 14 assists to just seven turnovers, but it was defense that helped secure the win down the stretch. After Holy cross cut the lead to 72-71 on a layup by Swords with 1:08 to pay, the Bison went just 1-of-2 from the line on three consecutive possessions. They held the Crusaders to a missed 3-pointer, a turnover, and another missed 3-pointer following those possessions.
The Bison, who remain in a tie with American for first place in the league standings, travel to play Navy on Wednesday at 7 p.m. The Mids are 8-10 overall and 3-5 in the Patriot League following a 49-35 loss to Boston University on Saturday.
