The Bison Upped Their Record to 15-4 Overall and 6-1 in the Patriot League
BALTIMORE, Md. – Kaitlyn Slagus scored a team-high 17 points and Kate Walker finished with nine points, nine rebounds, and seven assists to lead the Bucknell women's basketball team to its fifth straight win, 75-57 at Loyola (Md.) in a Patriot League game at Reitz Arena on Wednesday.
Bucknell improved to 15-4 overall and 6-1 in the Patriot League as it remained in a tie with American atop the conference standings. The Bison won the first head-to-head matchup with the Eagles. Loyola dropped to 2-16 overall and 1-6 in the conference.
Ellie Mack scored 10 points in the first quarter and finished with 14 for the game, while Kyi English scored 13 to give Bucknell three players in double-figures. The Bison shot 50 percent (31-62), including an 8-for-10 night by Slagus. Autumn Ceppi hit all three of her shot attempts and totaled seven points one game after scoring a career-high 12 in a win at Colgate.
Slagus did nearly all of her damage in the paint with the exception of one free throw. The Bison scored 38 points in the paint while allowing just 10 by the Greyhounds.
"It was another all-around solid effort from this group," Bucknell head coach Aaron Roussell said. "It was huge being able to assert ourselves around the rim, and then we complemented that with some big shots from the perimeter, as well."
Loyola jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead, but Bucknell responded with a 10-0 run and didn't trail for the remainder of the game. Walker and Mack scored five points apiece during the run as each hit a 3-pointer and a layup. The Bison took a 24-16 lead after one quarter and upped it to 43-29 at the break. The halftime lead would have been 17 if not for a half-court buzzer-beater by Alexis Gray.
Walker was on pace for a triple-double after one half, tallying seven points, six rebounds, and six assists.
Bucknell led by as many as 21 with a 59-38 advantage late in the third quarter but Loyola (Md.) did make one final run to get within 10 (61-51) with 5:12 to play. English scored seven points in the final one minute, 30 seconds to help put the game away.
"When our offense is clicking and we are making our shots, we are a tough team to beat," Roussell said.
Gray led all scorers with 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting, including a 3-for-4 mark from beyond the arc. Bri Betz-White scored 16 points and was also 3-of-4 from long range.
The Bison finished with a 39-27 advantage on the boards and have had a double-digit rebounding margin in each of the last two games. Mack just missed a double-double with nine rebounds, while Slagus added seven.
"We know we have a lot to work on and were exposed by some things tonight, but it's a prideful bunch that will continue to build and get better," Roussell said.
Bucknell looks to keep its winning streak intact when it hosts Holy Cross on Saturday at 2 p.m. The Crusaders are 11-7 overall and 3-4 in the league after posting back-to-back wins over Boston University (75-69) and Army West Point (58-39).
