Bucknell Wrestling Begins EIWA Action in New Year

Bucknell at a Glance
• Bucknell is currently 2-3 (0-0 EIWA) on the season. The Bison most recently competed at the Ken Kraft Midlands Championships on Dec. 29-30, tying for 14th in a 67-team field with 38 points.
• At the Midlands Championships, Zach Hartman took third in the 157-pound weight class while Joey Gould finished fifth in the 141-pound weight class. The duo combined for 11 wins, including three over nationally ranked wrestlers and eight over seeded foes.
• Bucknell has now placed eight wrestlers on the podium at the Midlands Championships. Hartman and Gould joined current assistant coach Kevin LeValley (149, 1st in 2010, 3rd in 2009), Tyler Smith (141, 3rd in 2017), Bryan Burns (190, 4th in 1990, 8th in 1991), Ken Herceg (167, 5th in 1991), Brian Pitzer (158, 5th in 1997) and Shane Riccio (174, 7th in 2009) in that exclusive club.
• Hartman made a statement at the prestigious tourney, knocking off five seeded wrestlers to post a 6-1 record. The unseeded freshman also upset two nationally ranked grapplers in No. 15 Christian Pagdilao of Arizona State and No. 17 John Van Brill of Rutgers over the course of the two-day event. For his efforts, he became the first wrestler to be tabbed as the Bison Athlete of the Week in 2018-19.
• With 2018 in the books, Hartman (12), 174-pounder Frankie Guida, Jr. (11) and 197-pounder Drew Phipps (10) have all reached the double digits in victories.
• Hartman is tied with fellow freshman Jacob Ferreira (174) for the team-lead with three pins while Phipps is tied with Jakob Campbell (125) for the team-high with three major decisions. Four Bison have recorded a technical fall: Geo Barzona (125), Brandon Seidman (125), Matthew Kolonia (141) and Joe Scott (197).
• In 2018-19, the Bison returned one NCAA qualifier and three EIWA placewinners. Garrett Hoffman (184) earned an at-large bid to the 2017 NCAA Championships, where he bowed out after two bouts. David Campbell (133) and Phipps (184) each took eighth at the 2018 EIWA Championships while Gould (133) was eighth at the 2017 rendition. All but Campbell have since changed weight classes.
• Bucknell's captains are D. Campbell, Hoffman, Phipps, Nick Stephani and Brandon Stokes.
• The Bison enjoyed one of their most successful stretches in program history from 2014 to 2017, compiling a combined record of 39-14 (23-5 EIWA) and placing third at the 2016 and 2015 EIWA Championships.
 • In 2017-18, Bucknell battled injuries and used 22 different starters in dual competition, ultimately finishing with a 3-14 (2-7 EIWA) ledger. The performance of 141-pounder Tyler Smith, one of six seniors lost to graduation, was a bright spot; he became the program's fifth four-time NCAA qualifier and seventh EIWA runner-up. He also put together the 11th undefeated dual season in school history and became the 10th Bison to reach the 100-win plateau.
• Head coach Dan Wirnsberger, who is in his 14th year at the helm, has a 115-118 record. He and Bob Ferraro, who led the Bison to a 169-175-6 record from 1974 to 1997, are the program's only head coaches to reach the 100-win plateau.

Bison Ranked
• Following his impressive performance at the Midlands Championships, Zach Hartman (157) vaulted to 11th in the FloWrestling's rankings, which were released on Dec. 31.Â
• In The Open Mat rankings released on Jan. 3, Hartman went from unranked to top 10. He came in at 10th, and eight of the nine grapplers ahead of him hail from Power 5 conferences.
• Hartman first entered FloWrestling's rankings on Dec. 24. The freshman came in at No. 20; it was the first was ranked by any of the three major wrestling publications: Intermat, The Open Mat and FloWrestling.
• Unlike FloWrestling and The Open Mat, Intermat didn't release new rankings following the Midlands Championships; its last poll was released on Dec. 25.

• Navy is currently 1-1 (0-0 EIWA) on the season with a loss to No. 2 Ohio State (9-28) and win over Maryland (31-6). The Midshipmen most recently attended the Southern Scuffle on Jan. 1-2, where they placed 5th of 23 teams. Two-time NCAA qualifier Nicholas Gil (141) was Navy's top placewinner, finishing third.
• Four Midshipmen were ranked by Intermat in its most recent poll on Dec. 25: Gil (No. 18 at 141), Jared Prince (No. 17 at 149) and Spencer Carey (No. 17 at 174).
• In 2017-18, Navy went 10-3 (3-2 EIWA). The Midshipmen placed fifth at the EIWA Championships, qualifying five for the NCAA Championships. Of that group, Nicolas Gil (141) and Jared Prince (149) return in 2018-19.
• Navy leads the all-time series with Bucknell, 21-1. The Bison and Midshipmen met for the first time since 2009 a year ago in Annapolis, Md.; Navy moved to 4-0 on the season with its 26-10 victory on Jan. 7.
• The Bison last defeated the Midshipmen in 1986, scoring a 19-12 win.
• This is the second-straight season Bucknell will face Navy to ring in the New Year.
