LEWISBURG, Pa. – Despite Zach Hartman's 13th victory of the young season, and last-second wins by Jakob Campbell and Kyle Inlander, the Bucknell wrestling team fell to Navy, 26-9, in its EIWA opener on Saturday at Davis Gym.
Hartman, who is currently ranked as high as 10th nationally at 157 pounds, remained unbeaten against unranked wrestlers with his 4-2 decision over Quentin Hovis. Locked in a 2-2 tie at the end of two periods, Hartman methodically rode out Hovis in the third period to clinch the riding time point; he also picked up a point for stalling early in that frame.
With his victory, Hartman improved to 13-4. His four losses came to wrestlers ranked in Internat's top 10, one of which was in sudden victory.
Campbell gave the Bison (2-4, 0-1 EIWA) early momentum with his 7-6 decision over Jacob Allen at 125 pounds. With Allen nursing a one-point lead with 20 seconds remaining in the third period, Campbell scored a takedown; he then kept a scrambling Allen from escaping to keep the bout from going into overtime.
Like Campbell, Inlander was a comeback winner. In his 184-pound bout with Anthony Cable, he erased a 3-2 deficit in the final 15 seconds, picking up a penalty point and recording a takedown. Inlander ultimately walked away a 5-4 winner after Cable escaped in the final second.
The Midshipmen (2-1, 1-0 EIWA) sent three ranked wrestlers to the mat, and all three emerged victorious. At 141 pounds, Joey Gould gave No. 18 Nicolas Gil, a former NCAA qualifier, a battle but fell by a 5-1 decision. Tanner Skidgel posted the dual's lone pin at 165 pounds, giving Navy what proved to be an insurmountable 17-6 lead.
With their victory, the Midshipmen improved to 22-1 all-time against the Bison. Bucknell last defeated Navy in 1986, scoring a 19-12 win.
The Bison continue EIWA action at Lehigh on Friday, Jan. 11 at 7 p.m.
