The Bison Senior Scored the Go-Ahead Goal with 1:12 Left in Regulation
LEWISBURG, Pa. – Nicole Rupnik scored with 1:12 left in regulation to give Bucknell a 3-2 win over Lock Haven in a non-conference field hockey game Friday at Graham Field. It was the second straight game that the Bison won with a late goal as the team improved to 3-2 on the season.
Bucknell has won three straight games, all of which came at Graham Field. The Bison have won seven straight home games overall dating back to last season. When they host VCU on Sept. 30, more than a full calendar year will have passed since the Bison's last home loss.
Lock Haven dropped to 3-2 on the season. The Bald Eagles have wins over Lehigh, Towson, and Cornell.
Rupnik's goal put the finishing touch on a back-and-forth game as neither team led by more than a goal. Bucknell earned a penalty corner that resulted in a blocked shot with 2:50 to play, but Brittany Willwerth snagged the rebound and earned the team another penalty corner. Quick took the insert and fired a shot that was deflected in by Rupnik. It was the senior's second goal of the season.
It was the second assist of the game for Quick as she helped Bucknell score in a similar fashion for the first goal of the game. She received the insert on a penalty corner and sent a pass toward the middle that was deflected in by Kaelyn Long to put the Bison up 1-0 just 3:35 into the game. It was the first goal of the season for Long.
From there the teams traded goals, starting with a game-tying score by Katie Supey in the 22nd minute. That concluded the scoring for the first half as the teams took a 1-1 tie into the break.
Quick put Bucknell up 2-1 in the 48th minute with her third goal of the season. Another goal that followed a corner, this one was set up by Olson from the top of the arc and Quick redirected it past the goalie. Quick tallied four points in the game with her one goal and two assists.
The four-point day came just one game after Quick scored late in double overtime of a 2-1 win over Richmond at Graham Field. Lock Haven looked poised to send Friday's game into overtime after Mackenzie Farley tied it up at 2-2 with just over 10 minutes to play.
Farley's goal came just 19 seconds after a Bucknell timeout, but the Bison returned the favor with the game-winner. Lock Haven had called a timeout 1:38 prior to Rupnik's goal.
Olivia Harris made two saves in goal while picking up her third straight win. Lock Haven's Brianna Deangelis made five saves in a losing effort.
The Bison finished with a 9-4 advantage in penalty corners and a 14-9 lead in shots.
Similar to recent seasons, Bucknell has utilized a balanced offensive attack through the first five games. Seven players have combined for the team's 11 goals.
Bucknell goes on the road for its next four games, starting with its league opener at Colgate on Sept. 15. The Bison follow that with games at No. 10 Syracuse (Sept. 16), Lehigh (Sept. 22), and Monmouth (Sept. 23).
