Willwerth's Hat-Trick Sparks Field Hockey in 6-0 Win at Colgate
9/15/2018 1:24:00 PM | Field Hockey
The Bison Improved to 4-2 Overall and 1-0 in the PL with a Fourth Straight Win
Nicole Rupnik added two goals, and Chloe Poltonavage scored once to help the Bison win their fourth straight game. It's the team's longest winning streak since closing the 2016 regular season with victories over Columbia, Lafayette, Lock Haven, and Colgate.
Willwerth opened the scoring for the Bison, giving her team a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute. She received a nice centering pass from Katie Mannino and sent it in for her second goal of the season. Her other two goals came in the second half. The junior's second goal of the game came off an assist from Allie Christopher and put her team up 4-0. Her final goal was assisted by Rupnik and completed the scoring at 6-0.
The hat-trick was the first by a Bucknell player since Willwerth scored three goals in an 8-0 win over LIU Brooklyn on Sept. 6 of last season.
Rupnik scored twice in the first half to help Bucknell take a 3-0 lead. Her first goal came with an assist from Sally Olson in the 28th minute, and the second was assisted by Willwerth with just 34 seconds left in the half. The senior has 21 career goals, just four shy of moving into the top-10 in program history.
Including the game-winning score against Lock Haven last weekend, Rupnik has three goals over the past two games.
Poltonavage's goal came midway through the second half and gave Bucknell a 5-0 lead. Lexi Quick registered an assist on the play, giving her a team-high 11 points on three goals and four assists. Quick has tallied either a goal, assist, or both in every game during the Bison's four-game streak.
Olivia Harris picked up her second career shutout, stopping all three shots she faced. The Bison controlled the pace throughout, finishing with a large advantage in shots (25-6), shots on goal (13-3), and corners (13-2).
The win was the 99th of head coach Jeremy Cook's career, with all 99 coming during his 10 years at Bucknell. With one more he will become just the second coach in program history to reach the 100-win milestone. Cook improved to 12-0 in his career against Colgate.
The Bison will face a tough challenge Sunday as they make the short trip from Colgate to Syracuse to take on the 12th-ranked Orange. The game is scheduled for 1 p.m.
