LEWISBURG, Pa. – For the second time this week, Bucknell freshman Kate Henesey provided the lone goal in a 1-0 Bison victory. The latest came on Saturday at Emmitt Field, as Bucknell made her 13th-minute goal hold up en route to its third straight win.
The Bison improved to 5-6-1 on the season and 3-1 in the Patriot League, while Holy Cross fell to 3-8, 1-3. Bucknell began this winning streak with a 2-1 win at American, then followed with a 1-0 blanking of Loyola at home on Wednesday. The Bison have not conceded a goal since the second minute of the American game, and the defense has now logged 268 straight scoreless minutes.
Saturday's clean sheet was not without its tense moments, as Bucknell had to defend seven corner kicks and some persistent pressure from the Crusaders. The closest call came on a Holy Cross free kick in the 71st minute, when Carly Baggott headed a shot off the line, and then a follow-up attempt popped over the bar.
Baggott also made a key play in the first half, when she closed down on an open shooter and deflected the shot wide.
Theresa Adu-Attobrah made four saves, including a tricky one 10 minutes into the first half on an Ang Seslija flicked header, and Adu-Attobrah earned her fourth shutout of the season.
Bucknell capitalized on its first good scoring opportunity of the match. Ali Russo, who was terrific all day from her right back position, set the goal in motion by winning a ball back at the top right corner of the Holy Cross box. Russo played the ball wide to Bailey Hurst, and her service took a bounce in the area and then was volleyed home by a leaping Henesey inside the six.
It was the second goal of the year for Henesey, who also scored on Wednesday against Loyola.
Holy Cross finished with a 17-16 edge in shots, but the Bison put 10 on frame compared to the Crusaders' five. Sophie Lettieri made nine saves for Holy Cross, including a tough tip-over on Gabby Bair's attempt at an insurance goal in the 81st minute.
"I was very happy with how we started the game, and it was important to get the early goal," said head coach Kelly Cook. "We had a little bit of a lull after that, but in the second half we came out attacking again. Overall, the group is growing and learning each game. We still have a way to go, but we're very happy with the result and the team effort today."
Bucknell will play its next two games on the road, starting with a non-league game at Princeton on Tuesday night.
