Early Goal Sends Princeton Past Bison, 1-0

PRINCETON, N.J. – For the fourth time this season, the Bucknell women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to a team that played in the NCAA Tournament a year ago. Gabi Juarez scored just 2:14 into the match, and that is all Princeton needed to turn back the Bison by that narrow 1-0 margin on Tuesday night at Sherrerd Field.
The Tigers, who have been nationally ranked for much of this season after advancing to the NCAA quarterfinals last year, improved to 7-2-2 in 2018. Princeton is currently the top team among "others receiving votes" in the United Soccer Coaches Poll, and it is ranked No. 2 in the East Region behind unbeaten and fifth-ranked Georgetown. Bucknell, which has now played five 2017 NCAA teams, fell to 5-7-1.
Bucknell's three-game winning streak game to an end, as did its 270-minute scoreless streak when Juarez got behind the Bison back line just moments after the opening touch. Caroline Noonan played a long diagonal ball along the ground. A Bucknell defender got a foot on it but could not control it, and Juarez ran onto it in space and slotted home her fourth goal of the season.
The Bison defense held strong from there, even though Princeton's potent offense continued to apply pressure. The Tigers finished with a 21-7 shot advantage, but Theresa Adu-Attobrah made five saves, and another ball was cleared off the line in the 67th minute.
Bucknell nearly tied it in the 85th minute, but a shot from Bri Kropinack struck the crossbar. Emilene Parham and Bailey Hurst led the Bison with two shots apiece.
Playing a mid-week, non-conference game in the midst of an important stretch of Patriot League contests, Bison coach Kelly Cook utilized seven substitutes for at least 17 minutes apiece, and only two field players went the full 90 minutes. Senior Camille Andrews made her first career start at right back.
Bucknell gets back to Patriot League action on Saturday at Army West Point at 7 p.m. The Bison are 3-1 in league play, while the Black Knights are just two points behind at 2-1-1.
