Henesey’s First Career Goal Sends Bison Past Loyola, 1-0

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Junior goalkeeper Theresa Adu-Attobrah kept Bucknell level with a first-half penalty-kick save, and freshman Kate Henesey poked in her first collegiate goal in the 75th minute to send the Bison to a 1-0 win over Loyola on a soggy Emmitt Field pitch Wednesday night.
Bucknell won its second straight Patriot League match to get to 2-1 in conference play and 4-6-1 overall, while Loyola fell to 3-7, 0-3.
The Bison defeated the Greyhounds for the sixth straight time, but this one was not without its tense moments. Loyola's Ann-Kathrin Wolfram's rising shot from the top of the 18 just missed the bar on the half-hour mark, and about five minutes later a well-played through ball resulted in the penalty.
Julia Gray went low to the left post on her penalty attempt, but Adu-Attobrah had it covered all the way.
Meanwhile, Loyola's back four stifled the Bison in the first half. Despite four corner kicks and a dangerous free kick, Bucknell did not muster a shot on goal and only three total. Play opened up a bit early in the second period, and just over four minutes in, Henesey forced Sumer Rahe into her first save of the night with a lunging stop going to her left.
Adu-Attobrah was called upon again in the 63rd minute. She made a tricky kick save on a free kick from Hanna Hoefs that skipped in along the wet surface, and then the Bison keeper recovered to pluck a second attempt from the right side of the area.
That set the stage for Bucknell's breakthrough. It started from a Holly Burns outswinging corner kick that was headed on by Carly Baggott, but was then headed off the line by a Loyola defender stationed on the left post. Emilene Parham then volleyed a high ball back toward goal. Rahe tried to corral it, but the ball fell to her feet, where it was quickly slotted home by Henesey.
The freshman-to-freshman scoring play was all the Bison would need, although they almost tacked on another when Bailey Hurst hit the crossbar in the 80th minute.
In the closing minutes, Bucknell defended one corner kick, and Adu-Attobrah made one final save, a routine catch for her fifth save of the night.
Loyola outshot Bucknell 13-10, while the Bison led 8-2 in corner kicks. Rahe tallied for saves for the Greyhounds.
Bucknell has another home Patriot League game on Saturday when Holy Cross visits at 1 p.m.
