Volleyball Drops Patriot League Opener to Navy, 3-1

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell and Navy battled to a 1-1 tie before the Mids pulled away with a 3-1 (25-19, 23-25, 25-20, 25-14) win in the Patriot League volleyball opener for both teams Friday at Davis Gym
Bucknell dropped to 5-7 overall, while Navy improved to 9-5 with back-to-back wins.
Juniors Mimi Richards and Bridgette Holland continued their strong play in the middle for the Bison. Richards finished with 14 kills and five total blocks, while Holland tallied eight kills and three block assists. Jennie Burke had four block assists, helping the Bison finish with nine blocks as a team. They rank second in the Patriot League in that category, averaging 2.37/set.
Four Bucknell players finished with double-digit digs, led by Sophie Bullard with 15. She was joined by Brooke Stark (13), Blake Buchholz (12), and Alexa Bonanno (10). Charner Ramsey led the team in assists with 18.
Maddi Sgattoni did a lot of the damage for Navy with 21 kills. She was helped a lot by Patricia Mattingly with 46 assists.
Bucknell held Navy to just .157 hitting, but the Mids had 13 blocks. The Mids also benefitted from nine service errors by the Bison.
Navy was the first opponent of a tough opening stretch of Patriot League play for Bucknell. The Mids were picked to finish third in the conference, while American, who the Bison host on Saturday at 5 p.m., is the preseason favorite. The Bison follow that with a long road trip to Holy Cross and Colgate the following weekend.
