Women's Soccer Maintains Air-Tight Defense in Scoreless Bout at Saint Francis (Pa.)

LORETTO, Pa. -- The Bucknell women's soccer team has been outstanding defensively throughout the first three weeks of the 2018 season, and that trend continued on Sunday with a 0-0 draw at Saint Francis (Pa.). Combined with a 1-0 win over Towson on Friday night, the Bison went 200 minutes without conceding on the weekend, and the four goals allowed through six games are tied for the second-fewest at the start of a season in team history.Â
The Bison are now 2-3-1 on the campaign, with four of the six games coming against teams that played in the NCAA Tournament last season. Saint Francis, like Bucknell a two-time defending conference champion, dropped to 2-2-2.Â
After an evenly played first half, Bucknell had the better of play for much of the second half and overtime. The Bison outshot the Red Flash 13-1 in the second half, 14-5 after halftime, and 21-12 overall. Bucknell finished the day with a 12-1 advantage in corner kicks, including seven in the second half and three more in OT, but could not find the finishing touch.Â
Theresa Adu-Attobrah tallied five saves en route to her second straight shutout, none bigger than her charging stop on Claire Renninger to thwart a breakaway in the 84th minute. That was the Red Flash's best look in a second stanza that was mostly played in the other end of the pitch.Â
Bailey Hurst, who attempted a whopping 11 shots in the game, forced Saint Francis keeper Julia Hernan to make a diving save in the 55th minute. Jenna Marek had a decent look in the 89th minute, and then with just 10 seconds left in regulation, Hurst did well to bring down a long ball into the box, but her turning shot sailed high. Hurst also had a good opportunity in the first half when she chipped the goalkeeper, but the shot barely went wide of the left post.Â
Bucknell nearly won it seven minutes into extra time when Gabby Bair got behind the defense, but Hernan came off her line to block Bair's shot. The Bison then had three corner kicks in the second 10-minute overtime period but could not connect.Â
The team record for fewest goals allowed in the first six games of a season is three by the 2016 squad. The Bison also yielded four in six games in 2002.Â
The Bison continue their difficult non-conference schedule on Thursday when William & Mary visits Emmitt Field for a 7 p.m. contest.Â
