LEWISBURG, Pa. -- Reserves Alli Munro and Katie Butler scored goals to lift Lafayette to a 2-0 victory over Bucknell in the Patriot League opener for both teams on Saturday at Emmitt Field.Â
The Leopards (4-4-0, 1-0-0) led 1-0 at the half and then added an insurance goal with Bucknell pressed up in the 87th minute. The Bison (2-6-1, 0-1-0) outshot Lafayette 16-6 and led 9-1 in corner kicks, but despite applying heavy pressure in the second half, they could not find an equalizer.Â
Bucknell was inches away from taking the lead in the 21st minute, but a header from Emilene Parham skipped just wide of the right post after a great service from Ali Russo. Four minutes later the Bison recycled a corner kick back into the box and the ball fell for Claire Mensi, but Lafayette keeper Maggie Pohl was there for the save.Â
In the 30th minute, Lafayette went up 1-0 on a Munro breakaway. The sequence originated from a throw-in, and then Butler flicked a pass to Sophia Hudson, who played in Munro for a clear breakaway. Theresa Adu-Attobrah got a piece of the shot but not enough to keep it out.Â
The ball was in the Lafayette end of the field for much of the second half. Kate Henesey had a sliding attempt at the left post go wide on the hour mark, and a few minutes later Maddie Dano went for goal on a free kick from outside the right edge of the box, but Pohl parried it out for a corner kick. Ali Russo ran on to a free ball from 25 yards out and just missed the top right corner with 8:30 to play.
The Leopards iced it with 3:35 left, when Butler fired a shot from the right side of the area into the far side netting.Â
Pohl finished with four saves for the Leopards, who snapped a 16-game unbeaten streak (0-14-2) against Bucknell. Adu-Attobrah collected three saves. Mensi and Gabby Bair led the Bison with three shots apiece.Â
Bucknell returns to action next Saturday at American at 2 p.m.Â
