Volleyball Drops Pair at Zips Invitational, Buchholz Named All-Tournament

The Bison Lost to Toledo and Akron on the Day
AKRON, Ohio – Bucknell volleyball faced a challenging task Saturday with two matches against opponents from the Mid-American Conference. The Bison nearly pulled off the win against Toledo before falling 3-2, and closed the Zips Invitational with a 3-0 loss to host Akron later in the day.
"This was a tough tournament to get us ready for league play," Bucknell head coach Anna Allison said. "The goal is to continue to grow as a team and continue to improve with every match."
Bucknell closes league play with a record of 5-6. The Bison open the Patriot League portion of their schedule with a home match against Navy on Friday at 7 p.m.
Blake Buchholz was selected to the All-Tournament Team on Saturday. She was joined by Akron's Ashley Richardson and Alexis Adleta, Toledo's Zoe Birnbrich and Chloee Kleespies, and Youngstown State's Giovanna Kuntze.
Toledo 3, Bucknell 2 (22-25, 22-25, 26-24, 25-13, 15-13)
Bucknell nearly pulled off its first ever win over a team currently in the MAC, but Toledo took the final three sets and the 3-2 victory.
The Bison looked solid through two sets, winning both with 25-22 scores, and had a great comeback in the third set that put them in position to get the sweep. Toledo led 18-11 before Bucknell battled back to tie at 21-21. The teams were again tied at 24-all thanks to a kill by Bridgette Holland, but the Rockets scored the final two points to avoid defeat.
Toledo rolled through set four with a 25-13 score to set up another close set in the fifth. Bucknell took a 12-11 lead before falling 15-13.
Buchholz registered a double-double, finishing with a team-high 16 kills in addition to 14 digs. Her kill total came with a .389 hitting percentage. Joining her with double-digit kills was Holland with 13. Jennie Burke and Sophie Bullard added nine apiece, while Mimi Richards contributed eight.
Bullard was the team leader in digs with 17, while Brooke Stark finished two behind her with 15. Alexa Bonanno did her part with 15 assists. Richards and Bullard each tallied four total blocks.
Kleespies led all players with 19 kills, and Birnbrich added 15. They helped Toledo improve to 4-6.
Akron 3, Bucknell 0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-19)
Richardson finished with 15 kills on .636 hitting to lead Akron to a 3-0 win over Bucknell in the final match of the tournament for both teams. The Zips improved to 8-3, including a 3-1 victory over Youngstown State on Friday.
Holland led Bucknell with eight kills, while Richards tallied seven and had four block assists. The Bison had six aces, including three from Burke and two from Buchholz.
