WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – Alli DeLuca's 26th-minute goal accounted for all the scoring in Monmouth's 1-0 victory over Bucknell in non-league women's soccer action on Friday night at Hesse Field.
The Bison fell to 1-2 on the season, with both losses coming by 1-0 counts to reigning conference champions. Last Friday it was defending Colonial Athletic Association champion Hofstra prevailing on a late goal. This time it was Monmouth, winners of five straight Metro Atlantic Athletic Association regular-season titles and two straight MAAC Tournament crowns.
The Hawks controlled play early, attempting the game's first eight shots. That included DeLuca's goal off a rebound at the 25:56 mark.
Bucknell generated more chances in the second half, outshooting Monmouth 9-7 including a couple of strikes off the crossbar from Alex Catanzarite and Claire Mensi. Kate Henesey led the Bison with four shots off the bench.
Bison goalkeeper Theresa Adu-Attobrah had a big night, finishing with a career-high 10 saves. Amanda Knaub had two saves for the Hawks.
Bucknell's tough schedule continues on Sunday with a road test at No. 7 Virginia. Game time is 2 p.m. on ACC Network Extra and the WatchESPN app.
